Samsung revealed a new technology that would add a smartphone-connected display to a motorcycle’s windscreen. Samsung worked with revealed*Yamaha (http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/yamaha.html) on a prototype of its new Smart Windshield, applying the technology on a Tricity three-wheeled scooter.
The Smart Windshield shows information on a screen build into the shield itself. The screen is transparent and located low on the shield so it doesn’t obscure the rider’s vision. The screen connects to a smartphone via WiFi. An app on the phone relays information to the screen, showing GPS navigation directs, email and messaging notifications and incoming calls. The app can also automatically send a text reply to incoming calls, telling the caller you’re on the road and can’t answer the phone.
Down the road, technology like the Smart Windscreen may form an important part of vehicle-to-vehicle communications. Yamaha is working with BMW (http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/bmw.html) and Honda (http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/honda.html) to form the Connected Motorcycle Consortium (http://blog.motorcycle.com/2015/10/06/motorcycle-news/bmw-honda-and-yamaha-cooperate-on-bike-to-bike-communications/) to develop a bike-to-bike communications standard, and it’s not a far stretch to see how a connected windscreen display may play a role.

At the moment, the Samsung Smart Windshield is at the prototype stage. We’ll have to wait and see how the technology develops, and whether it will be made available for various motorcycle and scooter models.
