THE 2016 MotoGP World Championship has begun at the Losail International Circuit with the reigning World Champion taking the chequered flag ahead of Andrea Dovizioso and Marc Marquez.

The start of a new season saw all of the top 12 riders qualify within a second of each other. It was Lorenzo who took pole position for 62nd time in his Grand Prix career and as the lights went out it was Spaniard who took the lead into the first corner ahead of Andrea Iannone and Dani Pedrosa.

Repsol Honda's Marquez made a poor start and dropped outside of the top five as Valentino Rossi took four place behind the Desmosedici pair.

On the start/finish straight the top end speed of the Ducati was revealed in all its glory as both Iannone and Dovizioso blasted past Lorenzo which dropped the World Champ into third at the end of the first lap.

It was Iannone who led across the line as both Ducati riders were able to open up a lead of several tenths pushing both Lorenzo and Rossi back to third and fourth.

At Turn 6 on lap three Marquez saw a gap up the inside of Rossi and took his chances to grab fourth. Rossi dropped back slightly after the pass to leave a 0.3s gap from Marquez.

On the sixth lap it was Dovizioso who tried for the lead, but was pushed back by his team-mate Iannone. Living up to his name of 'The Maniac Joe', Iannone crashed out at Turn 13 as he attempted to stick his Ducati machine up the inside of Dovizioso. Apparently touching the white line caused Iannone's crash, but fortunately he was unhurt.

British MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow was the next to crash at Turn 4 and with Iannone gone it was Lorenzo who was back to take the lead of which he did on lap nine.

Both Lorenzo and Dovizioso exchanged fastest laps of the race, but the Spaniard was able to maintain a slight gap ahead of Dovizioso to ensure his advantage of 5km/h down the start/finish straight made no impact.

As the race entered the closing stages of the race, Marquez had managed to close in on Dovizioso with Lorenzo out front continuing to extend his lead.

As the riders charged down the straight to begin the final lap Dovizioso passed Marquez into Turn 1, but it was Lorenzo who crossed the line a huge 2.019s ahead of second placed Dovizioso. Marquez attempted to pass the Italian in the final corner, but was forced to settle for third just 0.1s ahead of 'The Doctor'.

Dani Pedrosa completed the top five but was over 13 seconds adrift of Lorenzo. Maverick Viñales, Pol Espargaro, Bradley Smith, Hector Barbera and Scott Redding completed the top ten.

The fastest lap of the race went to Lorenzo who set a 1:54.927 on the 20th lap whilst Loris Baz and Stefan Bradl were two other crash victims. Both were unhurt.

Lorenzo leaves the opening race leading the championship with 25 points as the MotoGP World Championship move to Argentina for the second race of the season.
