Honda (http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/honda.html) Racing Corporation has signed two-time MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez to a two-year contract extension that will see him racing in Repsol colors through the 2018 season.
The contract extension, announced ahead of this weekend’s Catalunya round in Spain, will keep Marquez in the fold with Dani Pedrosa who also recently signed a two-year contract extension (http://blog.motorcycle.com/2016/05/16/manufacturers/honda/honda-locks-pedrosa-two-years/).
“We’re honoured to have reached an agreement with Marc for two more years,” says Shuhei Nakamoto, HRC executive vice president. “There’s no doubt that he is the present and future of MotoGP!”
Marquez entered the MotoGP class in 2013 and was an immediate threat, winning the world championship as a rookie. He followed that up with a successful title defense in 2014 that included a ten-race winning streak. In 60 MotoGP starts, Marquez has won 26 races and scored 44 total podiums and 32 pole positions. Marquez also has world titles in the Moto2 and 125cc GP classes.
“HRC and I have a very strong relationship, and I’ve always wanted to continue being a part of the Repsol Honda Team,” says Marquez. “In three and a half years together, we’ve enjoyed some unbelievable moments, with great victories and two world titles, as well as a few challenging moments that I believe are making us stronger.”
Entering this weekend’s race, Marquez sits second in the championship points race, just 10 points behind the leader, Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha (http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/yamaha.html). In six races this season, Marquez has two wins and five total podiums.
