I've heard from a few random places that Zongshen is fairly good. Nowhere near as good as the Japanese big-four, but you get what you pay for. What no Lifan? ;)

I have no idea who makes this Khao 250:

16HP... Top speed is only 75-85MPH but it's a Ducati mimic right down to the bars on the upper frame (similar triangular segments, though they aren't red) and the air scoops on the side of the passenger seat. :D

Ducatis:

Its funny being isolated to the US, I only think about the big 4 Japanese, HD, a few Euro, etc. Back in '74 you pick up a new bike buyers guide and it had brands from A-Z (Zundapp). Kind of cool that in other parts of the world there are still many brands.

Everything I buy "made in China"... and I mean everything, is defective in one way or another and fails immediately or within a few weeks of purchase. I always end up having to buy a replacement from an alternate source if at all possible... garden hoses burst, hummingbird feeders leak, glassware cracks, brooms break, light bulbs don't last long, deck chairs/market umbrellas, lead paint in childrens toys, poisoned pet food etc. etc. etc. I can just imagine the "quality" of these bikes..... I'll pass on even botherin to look them up or send more U.S. dollars to that country. They spend too much time "mimicking" products than gittin it right.

I posted this not to promote Chinese products, but as a take-off from an earlier thread titled "Chinese sport bikes?" - about a Korean product - a Hyosung GT250 impostered as a Suzuki on E-Bay.

Not in their defense, but an observation: Granted, most Chinese products are currently substandard, but recall the early Japanese cars (incl. Hondas, Toyotas...), and the early Korean cars (especially the Hyundai Pony) - they weren't all that great either, and boo-booed from coast to coast when they first came out in the 70s. Well, see where they are now. For the Chinese, I think they have great potential. There is general agreement, for example, that they put on the best Olympic games ever. But, true, I would hedge on buying their first gen sport bikes, just as we're urged to forgo the Hyosung GT250 in favor of the Ninjette.

A lot of people on this board were not around during the 70's and early 80's when the reliability of even the best bikes sold was still suspect. It just has not been that long since we quit seeing the kick starter.

I have no doubt that ten or fifteen years down the road that China will produce a top quality bike (they may already somewhere). My biggest concern is: "Am I going to risk my life on something that was made out of a recycled Chevy Cavalier? "

I think intense international competition will force quality into their products. How fast is up to them, and ultimately us if we don't buy their product.

The Chinese are right now leading in battery technology for electric cars (both used more or less domestically), wind turbines some of which being suspended horizontally and without friction by maglev (Magnetic Levitation), and solar energy, where entire experimental cities are run 90%+ on solar electricity.

Not sure what India is doing. Back to topic, I don't see any Indian sport bike.

Anthony,

I got an email from eBay saying they yanked the listing for the "GSX 250" for violation of policy.

Hey Ed Einstein, I consider this minor success the fruit of a little social activism on our part. Three cheers to Ninjette.org!

Would be interesting to keep our eyes on this swindler to see if next he/she repaints a Chinese "Super Motor" WS250 as a Kawasaki Ninja 250! :D (Those who haven't pls see the other thread "Chinese sport bikes?")

I remember many bikes in the 70s with electric start and a kick starter just in case. it was kind of weird at first when they started coming without kickstarters. i saw a good quote somewhere the other day "sure i own old British motorcycles, see the oil stains in my driveway?"

"sure i own old British motorcycles, see the oil stains in my driveway?"

Imagine Ted Simon riding around world on his leaky Triumph Tiger 500, solo, no support vehicle (see his book "Jupiter's Travels", a best sellers in the 80s):

"The first half of the journey took me the length of Africa, from Tunis to Capetown, then around South America from the tip of Brazil to the Argentine Pampas and from Chile north through Panama to California.
Then I rode around Australia, and from Singapore overland to Europe through India, Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey."

Ninja 250 world tour, anyone?
