Prince William Visits Triumph to Pose on and Near Motorcycles

Motorcycles can’t make everyone look cool, especially when you're not sure what to do with your hands

Motorcycles possess objectively cool and badass qualities to the point where their use in advertising and other media has long ago become a cliche when trying to convey hip or rebellious character. Sticking almost anyone on a motorcycle will usually make them look cooler, or at the very least a bit more adventurous, but Prince William recently visited Triumph Motorcycles' UK HQ, and the Duke of Cambridge was more awkward than cool.

His Royal Highness was at Triumph's Hinckley plant and headquarters for the opening of the facility’s new ‘Factory Visitor Experience’, a new behind-the-scenes tour open to the public, but while he was there he also toured the rest of the factory. A special hand-painted Union Jack tank inscribed with “Duke of Cambridge” was presented to the Prince, though I’m unsure as to whether or not this was a gift, or if this tank will remain on display in Hinckley.

During the 35-year-old’s visit to the manufacturer, he took one of the marque’s new Tiger 1200 ADV machines out for a spin. Despite wearing full ADV gear—from the waist up at least—the prince looks stiff in photos, something that was exacerbated by his dress shoes and slacks. He also tossed a leg over the brand’s wildly successful—and hip—Bonnie Bobber for what I assume were a couple obligatory photos for the Insta.

Despite sitting atop what is admittedly a really cool looking motorcycle, Prince William is the antithesis of cool. Baron Carrickfergus, a.k.a. the Earl of Strathearn has almost certainly spent exponentially more time in the saddle playing polo than riding a motorbike. When I took this position I was under the impression I wouldn’t be covering the British Royal Family in any capacity, and I imagine when you logged onto the site just now you probably weren’t anticipating this either, but as this story became larger and larger over the last two days not covering it became less and less of an option.
