Wow. Can you say "aerodynamic drag?"

Bet his fuel mileage with that honkin' huge thing sticking up was down in the 40s.

Looks like that big bag on the back of the new gen would make the front end light.

When I did it I had nothing more than a backpack and a 2-gallon tank bag. :)

Mine's down in the 40s without a sail!

Read the post, nice story, too bad there aren't more photos. That's one thing nice about riding alone--see something pretty and you can just stop to shoot it. The major downside is having no one to talk to while grubbing.

I don't see any big windfalls in my future...( to buy CBR)... But first summer break from school I'll be going to NY from Cali 2010. OUCH! after my seat mod.

Dude that seemed like a nice ride, I thought it was pretty neat that they asked directions from a dude on the forum, and did not know about it until that thread.
Also that Yamaha is very interesting, ive had my eye on the little WR250, for a while now, kinda pricey, but I can see my self on one of those in the future.

I have the same rack and have loaded up more than that. The effect on fuel mileage on an 800 mile trip was small. I still got low 50s. And no it does not make the front end light. It's the same as having someone on the pillion (except much lighter). It barely compresses the spring if at all. The way it's attached it has little to no leverage even if it were heavily loaded (your not supposed to attach more than 25lbs or so).

That makes sense to me. As I understand it, and by looking at your image, if you imagine a person on the bike, even tucked, most of the bag is in the wake of the vehicle and rider. So only the outer edges of the load would increase the drag. Now if you put any type of rack on a Prius, I'm certain it will have a measurable impact on its mpg. Because it has a way lower drag coefficient. Bikes have good gas milage despite a horrible drag coefficient partly because their frontal area is so small relative to cars.

Also, the Force Flex garbage bags over my luggage mean that I am cooler than all of you. ;)
