i see the threads about saddlebags and tail bags, but has anyone really loaded up the bike with a tent? sleeping bags? etc...

I'm leaving for a camping trip this Friday for Death Valley with
riders from the ninja250 forum. But they are all on 1st gens.

that set up is perfect! i think that's what i'll go with cause i already have a big tank bag and a bunch of different bungees... i just need some good saddlebags, and a smaller tent! although you never know... i think if i balanced it right i could use my tent... but i'd for sure have to have a smaller sleeping bag, regardless, thanks for the pic! nice to see it can be done :)

p.s. what other forum? when i googled i only found this one... (not that i'm leaving)

The bags at the top of the saddlebags contain 2 man tent, large thermarest basecamp pad, tent tarp, and 20deg north face sleeping bag. I put the sleeping bag in another bigger bag and not the stuff sack which will fit in the saddlebags if stuffed. I could also add a camping chair if I needed it. All the bags on top are 24" to fit the top of the nelson rigs cl-950 saddlebags and make it stable. Everything is double bungeed real tight! Saddlebags are strapped to the frame. Actually forms a backreat if you sit upright!
The cortech tank bag is just the right size so you can rest your chest on top when cruising on the interstate. I also have 12volt power to run a tire inflator, heated vest, cell phone charger. Tank bag has a hole in it for the 12 volt cord to charge the cell phone. Got all the backpacking stuff like jetboil, primus easylight latern.

First time camping with the ninjette went very well. Was still able to corner
hairpin twisties with ease, and still maintain cruising speed of 75mph and topped
out at 90mph with all my gear. In case you want to know, the new gens top
speed is higher than old gens by 5 mph. May have to do with the better aerodynamics
or the old gens had higher mileage with reduced performance!

haha! I am :) maybe even more excited then i was getting my first bike... it just feels like this one was made for me :) thursday cannot come soon enough!

I just did motorcycle camping on the bike this past Saturday! All by myself. I've been dying to try it to see if it could be done (by me:o). It's my favorite campground, about 150 miles from me: Highlands Hammock. Only a one-nighter, but a total success story nonetheless!

I love to camp. But this will be my first summer with a bike so bike camping will be new for me. I don't use tents however. I use a Hennessy Hammock. They are AWESOME...unless there are now trees around...then you're out of luck. anyone else ever use em????

Yup, I lived off this bike for nearly four months this past summer (2009). Except for the nice back rest that it created, I didn't even notice it while riding.

Its not a ninja, but it was packed for a 3 week, 5000 mile trip.

what do you guys do for maintenence on the road?

how would you clean and lube your chain? i'm guessing walk the bike forward.... anything else i should be thinking about if i go far?

I need a new four piece pack fly rod for the bike. Could use a new multi-piece spinning rod to go with it.

If you are going on a week ride, You'll be fine.
Most people don't even know you are supposed to lube your chains, and they are fine.

If you do regular maintenance you can skip one or two without having issues.
That is the point of doing regular maintenance. An ounce of prevention.

The guy who never does his maintenance and then takes off for the week ride probably won't make it back. But you will, only having skipped a chain lubing or three after 1200-2400mi from your normal maintenance schedule.

A toothbrush and rolling the bike along between each section of brushing with some WD-40 will do for a cleaning.

If you are going cross country, bring a "smartphone" and look up motorcycle stores alongside the roads and grab a can of chain lube for $10. If you can't carry it when done, donate it to some kind unsuspecting rider patronizing the shop before you move on.
