when you drain the tank, run the gas through a cloth filter as the gas makes it way into the gas can. After the tank is empty, examine what gets caught in the cloth filter. remember to set the petcock to reserve to get as much of the of gas out. If I were you, I'd repeat the draining by filling the tank up with about a pint/quart of gas and sloshing it around to flush out any remaining rubbish. repeat until nothing is caught in the cloth filter when the gas is drained.

Why did you want to drain the carb bowls? And if the gas coming out of there was clean and clear, why did you want to drain the tank?
