Pete - congrats! Tires are really the only must-have. I recommend Bridgestone BT016s in 110 front/140 rear size.

Next in order:

Full pipe with jet kit
Rearsets
Clipons

Believe it or not, the stock suspension is very good. If you're heavy, or braking very hard at a tight track, you can consider using heavier springs and oil in the front.

Hope that helps!

turbo, I'm completely lost. You just got your bike, you want to do track days, your boot's zipper broke after 4 track days, what tires do you need.

How long have you been riding?

I'm looking at Pirelli sport demon for my track day. I'm a novice rider as well.. so I figure I'll be using them on the street after my first track day coming up.

How ever... I know I want a 110 upfront and 140 on the rear. But theres so different kinds! For example:

140/70-17 66H SPORT DEMON REAR
140/80B17 69V SPORT DEMON REAR
140/70-18 67V SPORT DEMON REAR
140/70-17 66H SPORT DEMON REAR

Any input into the different sizes would be greatly appreciated... I would think all tyres have similar size designations as well?

You need 17 inch tires so these are the only ones that will fit:

140/70-17 66H SPORT DEMON REAR
140/70-17 66H SPORT DEMON REAR

Keep in mind, these are street tires, not race tires!

Yeah, they don't sell those. ;)

Yeah, they don't sell those. ;)

No, they don't! But I wish they did! :D

If you are planning to use the tires on the track only, get tires made for the track. If you want tires for street and track, know that you're nmaking a compromise... track tires won't last as long on the street as a street tire would and street tires won't stick as well on the track as a track tire would.

Novice riders who aren't riding at the absolute limit of the bike won't have a problem with a street/track tire. But once you're ready to start pushing the limits of the bike, you really should go to a proper race tire.

Are bald tires and slicks the same? They look the same!

Ninja Pete
April 25th, 2010, 06:09 PM
OK so are we all in agreement BT016s in 110 front/140 rear size are the way to go . and where can we get them at best price ?

Alex
April 25th, 2010, 07:42 PM
the 016's aren't available in 140, the smallest size is 150/60/17, and that's what some people run. You can get the 003RS's in 140/70/70.

Ninja Pete
April 25th, 2010, 07:46 PM
WOW tires are very VERY confusing ... so 003RS's are the best ?

Alex
April 25th, 2010, 07:48 PM
There is no best. And there is no spoon. Some folks prefer the 016's, some prefer the 003RS's, and some prefer other brands as well.

BT003 pro soft 120/70 front
BT003 R/S 140/70 rear

if its your first trackday ever, i wouldn't even do anything yet. ride it as is and get a feel for it. get a baseline of what it feels like, then go from there.

Ninja Pete

the R/S rear you should be able to find most anywhere. the pro front might be a bit harder. i have to get the front through our race distributor (south central race center). are you located in Louisiana? if you can't find a place that carries them, shoot me a pm and i'll give ya the number for SCRC, i'm sure you could get the tire shipped to you.

oh and if you're wondering why we're running a 'street/trackday' rear tire, its because they don't make a 'pro' rear in our size.

Ill add to your confusion....I run the BT-16s.....LOVE THEM

Best combo of price, performance, and tire life as far as im concerned.
110 / 150 and NO, the oversized rear tire does not take away from the bikes handling.

Trust me when I say, you will NOT be unhappy with these tires.

Buy the softer tires if you have an unlimited tire budget. BANG FOR THE BUCK you CANT beat the BT-16s.

I race on the BT-003s. I run the 110 front and 140 rear. Great tires and they fit the bike well.

As for Frank Thomas, their gear is crap. I've seen several suits burst open at the seams in crashes. I wouldn't buy any of it.

Good deal. That is cheaper than I paid at the track. Then again they did mount and balance them while I waited.

I love hearing about former renters getting there own bikes! Makes it all worthwhile :)

I'd leave the rear shock alone if I were you, at least for now. Its really a very good unit. Once you're within 2 or so seconds of the leaders, then you can start to chase those final .5 second improvements :)

Thanks for asking, but I don't sell tires on the site. I have some takeoffs available, but just couldn't make the numbers work on new tires.

is there a particular reason why you choose the 110 over the 120 for the front?

Yes, the 120 is too wide. Even with the 110 I have a 1/4" chicken strip on the sides from the tire being pinched.

Kristy - Any info online on the series?

Very little... the first race is this weekend (unfortunately, I can't attend) and they are still working on the rule book. They are putting out little announcements here and there about the series rules. Bridgestone is the official tire (BT 003s in 110/140). Beyond that, it's still pretty loosey goosey.

Here's the press release (http://www.cherrypickerracing.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15442&PN=1) announcing the series.

Great... I think you're going to really like them. Your rental bike more than likely had 016s on it.

Apparently, no one showed up to practice today, so there will not be a race for the Ninja 250 Cup tomorrow. :( I'm hoping there will be a few riders show up to round 2 on May 1/2 at Shannonville. I'll be there for sure.
