It isn't hard to tell if it's still good or not. I have had second hand helmets, just gotta check the outside for any signs of nicks or pocks from dropping it (if they drop it a lot, they don't care much for the helmet) and pull the pads and inspect the foam. If it's been in an accident, you can tell. If it's questionable, don't buy it.
