Anyone out here in the DFW area wanna meet up sometime? I've been riding about a month now and still haven't met any riders...lol.. and i kinda want to start up a group (or join a group, though i haven't heard anything about one) that meets up around once a month....anyways I'm located in North Richland Hills if anyone wants to meet up sometime.

I am open for suggestions, but there is a Honda dealership, Maxim Honda off of 75 near the route I was looking at. We can meet in the parking lot in the morning, say 8 or 9 am if that works for everyone. If not speak up, we are flexible in time and place.

I'm also free this Saturday morning until around 1300, and most of the day Sunday though riding in the afternoon will be somewhat...toasty... :)

What kind of activity do you guys think would be good to do? Meet for breakfast, ride X miles to somewhere interesting, head home? Or meet, ride, lunch? Or just meet somewhere for a convo hangout?

As to miles, what seems interesting? 50, 100? Less? More? There's not much for twisties around here unlike those lucky bastards in CA and GA, though personally I'm really not into pushing my limits or the bike's just yet; I've only been riding for 16 months though I've got 15k miles under my belt.

On my solo rides, I once went down old 157 toward Venus (some twisties), had a cold malt at the Whataburger there on 67, then went down toward Maypearl, worked my way over to the north end of Waxahachie (more mild twisties), toured around the old part of town, then rode back through Maypearl and back up 157 to Mansfield. It was a nice early morning ride, very low adrenaline. :)

We ought to get some facetime, anyway, that might help move planning along considerably.

Werehusky
August 10th, 2010, 07:11 AM
Yeah I agree, once we get to know each other better group rides will be a lot easier. I'm also open for this saturday morning, traffic isn't to terrible around 9-10ish but then starts heating up around. We could always do the simple 360/365 -> I-20 -> 820 -> 183 or some variation.

I've never done a group ride before so it would be my first, dont know how much experience you guys have with the group rides.

emdsd
August 10th, 2010, 07:15 AM
Part of the issue is how spread out we are. We all consider ourselves in the DFW are and yet I live northeast of McKinney and some of us are south of Duncanville. We can likely agree there are no nice pleasant rides in the Metroplex per say. There are some twisties up this way but it may take a 100 mile ride for some to get here.

Also, someone scheduled a church workday this Saturday so I am booked again.

FrugalNinja250
August 13th, 2010, 09:33 AM
I found out about it from a friend on the craigslist motorcycle forum yesterday. Just got off the phone with Grifs a moment ago and they say they'll be open at 1000 tomorrow. I'm going to head out around 900 and be up there around 940 or so.

They're on the NB I-35E access road south of Hebron so I'll go north from 121. I've got an event I have to be at in Fort Worth at 1400 so I'll probably have to leave Grifs no later than 1100 or so. Supposedly they're having a hotdog cookout as well, but don't know when that starts.

The forcast for tomarrow is going to be 10+ UV index and 104 high. Weather doesn't bother me even in full gear because I so used to it thanks to Iraq. But for those of us not attuned to it we would have to leave early.

Four of us showed up at Grifs. It was nice to meet Matt, Stephanie, and John! Grifs was fairly picked over but I got some new ProGel grips and a balaclava for this winter. We talked about bikes and what it's like riding in the area, and worked out a tentative plan to ride down to Stephenville southwest of the DFW area on the morning of Saturday, September 4th. The destination is the Hard 8 BBQ joint, some of the best BBQ in the area. the plan is to arrive around 11:30-11:45 am, get stuffed, then saunter back to the metroplex.

Just a reminder that a week from tomorrow (weather permitting since it's actually starting to rain around here again) we're going to ride down to Stephenville to the Hard-Eight BBQ restaurant, some of the best BBQ in this part of the country. This is (at this moment, anyway) not planned to be a twisty speed contest since some of us are still fairly new. Rather, the thought is to just ride down there in the morning and have a nice lunch and conversation, then ride back to the metroplex.

There are some more scenic back county roads to there and back; we can discuss during the week whether to take those going down, coming back, or both ways. The straightest route from the center of the metroplex at I-30 and SH-360 yields a travel distance of around 86 miles each way.

It didn't occur to me that this was a holiday weekend when we talked about it at Griff's. Do y'all think we should reschedule? My next free Saturday after that will be October 16th. Or, we could do it on Sunday? I can call down there to make sure they're open on Sundays. I'm free on the Sunday the 26th.

Or, we can do something more local that would use less time riding.

I'm down for some rides and get togethers. I have my MTC this weekend in Mesquite (Manchester) - has anyone taken that particular class? I'd like to know if the instructor is a hard-ass or not. Right on - then you may be familiar with the route I thought would be a nice ride from Dallas and back. It would be an all day thing - approx. 100+ miles. Starts off with fast highway followed by some twistys, next a new pristine blacktop, finished off with a some nice, smooth curves by the lake. Damn, almost sounds like Ninja Porn lol

oh and there would be some top notch places to stop by and grab a bite to eat during the trip.

Start in the Land of the Gars (Garland), ride up 30 east to 36 to 380. take 380 into Farmersville (could stop for grub here or go into Princeton), then take 78 south back into Garland.

That's a heck of a jump, be safe!

You can still ride with us (or we with you) regardless of what bike you ride. Nothing that says one can only ride with other like bikes. :)

Here's my ride report from Labor Day:

It's fairly short. I rode down to Venus Monday morning for a malt at the Whataburger on the corner of 67 and 157. My plan was to putt around the county roads down that way, probably over to Waxahatchie and back by way of Maypearl. While I was siting there enjoying my malt I made the random decision to ride to Stephenville for a nice BBQ lunch at the Hard Eight.

And so I went.

I took 67 down to Glen Rose, then caught 205 (a sparsely-populated winding county road) over to Stephenville, passing by Dinosaur Valley State Park. Once there hilarity ensued because the GPS insisted that the Hard Eight was north of the highway on Glen Rose Road. After cruising through that residential neighborhood a couple of times I called up the Hard Eight for directions.

The person I talked to had no sense whatsoever of compass directions. She kept telling me to turn at the Alsups (whatever that was) and I'd see them. I reasoned that since they weren't north of the highway they had to be south, so I crossed over and eventually found them about a mile down.

Just in time, too, as there was a Corvette club there and right behind me another 20 or so riders showed up.

I had a nice lunch (the jalapeno sausage is almost worth dying for) then headed back out.

On the way down I noticed my clutch started feeling odd. The friction zone was not only moving, but changing in width. I reasoned that the clutch cable was going south and spent mot of the return trip doing clutchless shifting, reserving the clutch for red lights and stop signs.

After getting home (A nice 180 mile round trip in the most perfect weather possible) I pulled the cable. There were perhaps 4 or 5 strands left intact. It's likely it would have broken in just a few more pulls. Fifteen minutes to button everything back together with a new cable and I'm good to go.

Alas, I didn't take my camera since it wasn't a planned ride. The 1mp cellphone camera is not worth taking pictures with.

The end.

That's an old pic, Reunion Arena is long gone. :(

Say, anyone up to some good catfish this Saturday? I'm unexpectedly free and I'm going to ride down to Irby's Burgers & Catfish in Granbury for lunch. I've got a 63 mile route mapped out taking 360 from Arlington down through Mansfield and catching FM 917 over through Godley and Acton and some other back county roads. Weather looks promising, only a 20% chance of afternoon rain. I'm planning on arriving around 11:30-ish and leaving about an hour later.

Had a nice ride. Got "misplaced" a couple of times because of mismarked roads, but no big deal since all roads lead to Irby's. It was a nice ride, relaxing for the most part. Took about an hour and 40 to go about 65 miles, saw some pretty scenery and interesting houses (the Barnett Shale's been good to a lot of folks out this way) and not a few horses. No longhorns, though. :)

The catfish was awesome! A little story is due here. Way back when I was a mere child I tried catfish for the first time. It was an awful experience. Full of bones and gooey, it was a soggy cold mess of bits by the time I got the bones out and ate the remains. Fast forward 30 years and a friend of mine took me to Irby's after doing some framing work at his house. I was hesitant for sure, but he talked me into trying my first catfish in three decades. It was transcendental. Since then I've made a point of getting back there a couple times a year, spring and fall.

Glad you had a good ride! I rode out to Possum Kingdom Lake with some friends. It was a great day. Almost 350 miles round trip. Here are some pics:

This was on top of what is called "Hell's Gate". I have a fear of heights so I was a little nervous.

Here we are crossing the Brazos below PK dam.

We stopped at a little place called Mary's Cafe for lunch. The meat on their burgers is literally about 2 inches thick.

This was at an observation point above the dam.

There is some beautiful scenery out in that area. I would definitely go back.

I'm fine with a short ride, a long ride, a medium ride. A ride to breakfast, lunch, or dinner (though the rain is 20%) would be fine. I ride in the rain no problem. There are places like Dinosaur Valley State Park that we could ride to, or we could ride to a small town like Hillsboro and eat lunch at this fantastic little Italian place on the square. Basically I can ride anywhere, anytime. My two 824 mile one day rides two weeks ago made me feel ready for anything. :)

If the decision where and what is arrived at after 5 today I'd appreciate a call since I don't have internet access outside of work. I'll post my number later today if need be.

PitBull
October 22nd, 2010, 06:17 AM
I'm fine with any length of ride as well. Based on the forecast as of today, it looks like if we ride west we will probably be ok on the rain. TXNinjaGirl, I'll let you make the call. I live in the Denton area so I'm fine meeting up wherever.

Nah, didn't happen. I'm thinking best thing is to meet someplace for a nice lunch and get to know each other session. Then we can plan a ride someplace, preferably without a lot of technical stuff.

I hear you about faster riders. The one group ride I went on last spring was with way faster riders on liter bikes, I just let them leave me in the dust. Wasn't particularly interesting to ride with them, never did again.

So, how many are going, does anyone want to meet for lunch, how will we recognize each other, where do we want to meet? I suggest that we can all gather at the Ninja 250's on display at the Kawasaki dealer booth on the hour, say 10am, 11am, noon. For that matter, maybe we could meet for breakfast before heading out? It opens at 9:30 am.

I don't have internet after 5pm on Fridays and not at all on weekends, so if anyone wants to get ahold of me they can call me at *. Leave a message if I don't answer, I may be on the bike and won't be able to answer right away.

I went Friday nite, smaller crowd, sale booths full of stuff and watched some of Jason Britton laying down his rubber. Saw the new Honda CBR 250, sat on it, like the positioning of the clutch/brake and hand controls and digitals, loved the tail treatment... but still prefer the ergos on the N-250 and the general look of the bike. I was drawn again to the N-650... for some weird reason.:o

It was a nice show, maybe not as nice as last year's (no KTM or Buell, reduced presence of custom/art bikes) but it was still nice to hang out with a few thousand people who all like bikes too. I got there a tad later than I'd planned, but hung out at the Kawi booth at 11, 12, and 1. I met EMDSD, really cool fellow to chat with, and his son Nate. Talked to lots of venders and such, the most interesting of which was the guy manning the Ducati booth section that had a Desmo motor on a stand. We talked tech for quite a while, it was a blast.

The free parking was, as usual, super easy to get to and very convenient to the convention center (at the front door). The bikes out in the parking lot were a varied lot, from current stuff to really old and obscure.

As near as I can tell there is only one bike show a year here in Dallas, which strikes me as absurd because of the size of the riding population here. Maybe that will change in the future as the percentage of the population getting on two wheels increases.

Frug.. I'm surprised there is not a "spring" show somewhere in town. Always check out the "auto" buildings at the big Fair downtown in hopes of a group of m/c dealers usually to no avail. This year Yamaha put in a booth with small sampling of sport and cruisers which was nice. I perused it twice as a matter of fact. Guess the cost of renting booth space there isn't conducive to the cost of running it. Small returns I suppose.:(

I am meeting a few Ninja 250 Riders Club members at Edom, Texas to have some home cooking at The Shed: http://theshedcafe.com. We plan to be at the Shed between noon and 1:00 PM.

The North Texas contingent will meet at the Wal-Mart in Commerce at 9:30 (My father was recently placed in a nursing home there and I need to drop by). KSU will be at 9:45 AM.

It will be cold so bundle up. I am placing the KSU a little late so we can fill up in Commerce and make the 90 mile run with no stops. I plan on taking the back roads to through Lone Oak, Emory, and Grand Saline to get there.

After lunch some of us will be collecting (as in photographing – see my website for examples) Interesting city limit signs in the Edom area including Coffee City and New York.

If you are interested in traveling from the Trenton area with me please contact me directly.

We're about halfway through prime spring riding weather here, temp wise. I'll be doing my annual pilgrimage to Irby's Burgers & Catfish in Grandbury, taking some nice scenic back roads to get there. I'll also be doing a back country ride to Hard Eight BGBQ in Stephenville, also taking back roads. Both routes are not particularly technical and I don't ride to scrape pegs anyway. Just a nice cool late morning ride. If anyone's interested in joining me let me know.

I'd also be interested in a Saturday or Sunday meet-n-greet in town, lunch or dinner, just to hang out and get to know one another.

Which round trip? One of them was 1,648 miles... :)

I'll have to find my notes, but IIRC the Hard Eight route was about 160-ish and the Irby's route was 80-ish round trip.

Hey guys. Just thought I would piggyback on this thread. There's a route that I've been riding just north of Waxahachie that I like very much. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in riding through as a group. I'm really just looking for a few people at most, as we will be going through small towns. I also would like to check out the small philly cheesesteak joint at the beginning.

Basically, the ride starts in Ferris, down to Waxahachie, up to Midlothian. Speed limit range low 35 but mostly 55 mph. It's moderately twisty but don't expect to drag any knees. (Actually, there are some sharp turns on the last leg, but you can see a lot of loose debris so I wouldn't take them too hard.) I'll provide a Google Maps link at the end.

So look over the route, let me know what you guys think, and whether or not you are interested. Perhaps some of you are already familiar with that route. Also, I don't have a problem with the cold so the only considerations regarding weather would be no rain or snow. Hopefully some of you are on the same page :D

Oh, I'm looking at sometime from now until Jan 17th. After that, I will be unavailable for an unknown timeframe.

I've been wanting to put together something for the local riders for a couple of years now, maybe 2012 will be the year. What I propose is fairly simple: A group of us ride to somewhere like a restaurant where we can eat a nice meal and have fun as fellow Ninja 250 riders. No competition, no seeing who's faster around through the twisties, just a social gathering.

If others in the area are willing to set aside a nice Saturday in the upcoming weeks, I'd humbly suggest a ride down to Grandbury where there's a nice hole in the wall catfish place called Irby's Hamburgers, or alternatively, there's an awesome BBQ joint called the Hard 8 located in Stephenville. Either would be a nice place to have lunch, swap stories, and generally be sociable.

Anyone in the Dallas area up for a ride in just before the new year? I will be taking leave and heading to SA then to Dallas. I will be there ft about a week before I have to. Report back to my unit. Feel free to invite friends, don't necessarily need to have a 250...

I talked to some CBR250 forum riders in TX and I think they are wanting to do a joint CBR/Ninjette 250 ride. So far they have been talking about doing the ride in Austin but DFW has also been tossed up as a place for a second meet. Just checking to see if anyone would be interested.

I'd be interested in DFW if it was in the next 2 weeks.

I'll see when they're wanting to do it. Originally they planned a huge Austin meet but it got pushed back to early next year. Mostly the CBR guys were around south TX. I think I found 3 so far in DFW. Be nice to get a larger crowd.

A ride would be nice...I have yet to be involved in a group ride yet. My father in law has a Vulcan. We will ride around a bit while I am up there.

I'll be passing through on IH-35N on my way to Ennis. Anyone care to join the ride?

Depends on when you're rolling through. More than likely I can't make it, I've got 2 big races this weekend. One in Belton and one in Temple.

In Ennis now. Pretty cold up here for any long rides. Hopefully the weather will carm up a little. I made it to Temple yesterday before I had my wife pull over to load the bike up.
