View Full Version : New ninjette.org style for mobile devices

I've installed a new theme for the board for people surfing on mobile devices. it should make it much easier to read on a gadget with a small screen like an iPhone, blackberry, etc. The board should automatically pick up that you're on such a device and configure itself for you.

If you don't see any changes when you're using a mobile device (or if you're not on a mobile device, but you see strange changes on the board), please PM me and we'll sort it out.

Any chance for an option to switch to regular view from mobile view? I find it easier browsing the page in full view from my mobile.

What happens if you click "change back to default style" at the very bottom of the page in the mobile browser?

I'm not sure if that will work to keep it in the normal (non-mobile) style for that session, but give it a shot and let me know.

that doesnt do anything but refreshes the page in mobile style.

OK -

Try it now. I have attempted to hardcode your ID to point you only to the normal (non-mobile) style; please let me know if that keeps you on the normal style while on your iPhone... Fingers crossed... :)

Which phone are you using? I can try and get the browser agent from it, and if it is unique enough, I may be able to make the site behave as you ask. Right now you're coming in from your PC:

(Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; InfoPath.2 )

If you log in with your phone, I can get that same info from your phone's browser.

OK - here's what I have as your user agent:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 1.1; en-us; dream) AppleWebKit/525.10+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.

I'll make the change now...

Works great on my LG Dare 9700, however it does not pick it up automatically. I have to choose it manually.

Greg -

If you PM me sometime when you're surfing with the LG, I can pick up the user agent string from your phone and set it so it picks it up automatically. But I can only get it within 30 minutes of your last login.

All good now.

I finally upgraded to my first smartphone (Blackberry 8530) and get an error message when i tried to sign in. Should i have downloaded something? I get "HTTP error 404: not found. The page you are trying to load could not be found. Please try loading a different page."

Any ideas from all you smartphone users?

Alex

that is weird, can't figure out how it would point to a non-existing page. Any chance your phone lost network connection while it was trying to log in?

I tried this and was able to get in...one time. Since then, no luck, whether in a thread or not. When I enter ID/Password and try to touch the logon button, I get a white box that states something like "You must enter a userid and password or choose register to obtain an id/password!"

Sam - are you trying to log in from the portal page, or from the forums page? I think that the portal page might be more likely to have an issue, while the forums page should hopefully work.

How can I get the regular website from a mobile? I would much rather be able to access the normal website sometimes.

Hi Jon -

I need the user agent on your phone to tweak it for you. An easy way to get it is to go to this site while on your phone:

http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

and paste it up this into this thread. Your user agent will be right at the top of that page. Should look something like this:

HTTP_USER_AGENT:Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; Trident/4.0; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Media Center PC 5.0; InfoPath.1; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; OfficeLiveConnector.1.5; OfficeLivePatch.1.3)

Thanks Alex for replying to my request so quickly. Images do load now instead of clicking each link. Also, another benefit I wasn't aware of (or maybe I'm imagining it) is that I can view more posts in one page. My vote is for default.

Thank you! Just last night I was trying to find this thread so that I could find the link to determine my user agent and I couldn't find it because "Search" still doesn't work on the mobile version.

OK - I've put in the phrase "Android 2.2" to not be detected as mobile phone. I was going to just put in Android, but with a fear that some of the earlier versions might not want the full version.

I'm not sure if the current setup will work long-term, and may need to investigate an easier way to switch between the two. I likely won't do this while we are still on the vbulletin 3.8.x series, but if and when I upgrade to the newer 4.X series, a better mobile experience may be part of that upgrade.

I love the mobile version (Im running Android I think 1.5 or something, not the latest upgrade(s)). It does everything I need it to do, while putting out a clean and simple (i.e. easy to read and navigate) page.

iPhones see the full site version, not the mobile version. The mobile site here is more useful on very limited smart phones with tiny displays.

Just switched from an iPhone over to an Android and didn't even realize there was a mobile version until then. Please set me up to see the regular site.

Hey Alex, 20 days later and I'm finally getting around to this:

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B206 Safari/7534.48.3

Also, just for a point of interest that may or may not be useful, the site worked great until I used the "Add to Home Screen" on my iPhone. Immediately after doing that, it went to the mobile style regardless of if I accessed via Safari or the shortcut. I also deleted the shortcut and it still used mobile version on the phone.

Thanks for the help.

Alex
July 29th, 2012, 08:06 AM
That's unexpected. There is an exclusion for all iphones. Literally, if it sees "iphone" anywhere in the browser string, it's supposed to not use the mobile version. I moved the phrase closer to the beginning, so maybe that will make a difference.

Nothing else to do - users with more recent Android versions (from 2.1 on) have preferred the main site rather than the limited mobile version, so that's what it points them to at this point. Looking forward to cleaner/simpler/more robust mobile options when I upgrade the site to the latest version of vBulletin in the next few months.

Have you tried using a cookie to send users to the full if they so desire? It's prevent you having to hardcode anything. Also I am on a Galaxy S3 and I see the full site. I can send my user agent if that would help.

The mod to do the device detection hasn't been updated in years (it's not mine, it's a vBulletin.org mod). Not planning on tweaking anything at all until the next versions of vBulletin, which already include better mobile capabilities right out of the box.

I just added "Android" on its own, so all android devices should be pushed to the full site at this point. The number of phones that are using such an old version of Android to prefer the mobile site seems low, but please let me know if this is an incorrect deduction.

just a suggestion (and don't know if possible).
There are apps like tapatalk (and forumrunner) that are used to read forums, they allow you to put in all your forums and it's like a better mobile version (with notifications and stuff). i use them in other forums and find them helpful.
