Should we add Broom's bike to this thread, did they ever sell his bike by the way?

My 250 is stripped to the frame right now, waiting on some funds to start putting her together for WERA. I'll post her when she starts coming together.

Yeah, and a slipper clutch is way more useful than a quick shifter is! The bike isn't fast enough for my shift speed to be a factor, but I do get wheel hop downshifting at speed. So, again what is so funny? Other than a quick shifter on a 250?

ztrack157
March 15th, 2011, 08:32 PM
I'm just giving you crap. Your use to a 600 and you probably just need a little more time on the 250 to get use to it. The quick shifters have shown to gain apx a foot a shift its not much I know. But for fast guys it matters slow pokes it doesn't.

No one will make a slipper yet because its not to the point where it would be profitable for them to produce it. If the AMA series we are working on happens then you might is one pop up sometime in the future. They are racing these things on the Euro stage this season so maybe one may pop up in the UK.

Ok. Some good points. I do need to get used to this thing. Will your quick shifter work with GP shift? I still think a slipper clutch would have helped me more this past weekend. I experienced wheel hop a few times trying to hold the lead. Andrew was just too fast.

Try using more brake than engine to slow down.

^That and know that the rev limiter doesn't work on downshifts. I'm pretty sure I destroyed the top end of my first motor over-revving it on downshifts.

And I agree that a quickshifter on a Ninja 250 is pretty funny.

March 16th, 2011, 01:03 PM
When I first got the 250, I thought the same thing about a slipper clutch when I first tried to "blip" on a fast twisty road.

I just can't seem to link the blip and the downshift - it seems like the bike takes too long to respond to the blip in throttle.

After a few rear tire hops - I still want one.

Nemesis
March 16th, 2011, 02:32 PM
Are you guys downshifting two really quick and popping the clutch out hence experiencing a wheel hop...is this why you feel a slipper clutch is needed?

switch
March 16th, 2011, 03:45 PM
when downshifting, i feather the clutch then back on the gas hard (i used to just dump the clutch). don't really get wheel hop, don't know if i ever really did. i've felt it 'slide' if i'm being aggressive, but even then its just kinda 'meh whatever'. don't know if i'd like a slipper, overkill IMO =P

Nemesis
March 16th, 2011, 03:49 PM
But are you downshifting one or two gears at once? Two gears I can understand...meaning you'll get some movement but nothing wild. One gear...don't feel a thing. Just modulate the clutch.

I usually just dump/pop it out which I don't recommend.

austexjg
March 16th, 2011, 04:10 PM
I was talking about going down at least two gears - I try too hard to ride some of the local roads IOM TT style (only with AGATT and very minimal traffic). It seems like using one gear at a time would mean letting off the throttle earlier - in a track mentality - which means slower times.

And I guess it "sliding" for a bit is the more common outcome, but at least twice while going from 6th to 3rd, I felt a little hop - but I guess it could have been my heart skipping a beat.

I got wheel hop when I dropped two gears trying to drive in deep going into "Patience" trying to pass Andrew. I also got it driving in hard into Turn 8 and dropping a couple of gears to get a good torquey drive out of Turn 10 while I was trying to hold Andrew off. It didn't work. I know I still need to learn this bike. I'm still riding like I'm on a 600. A few more track days and races will be good. I'm heading back to Colorado for a while. haha yeah stop shifting so much! Most of those turns you could carry enough speed through to hold a higher gear. You've definitely got the lean angle down, but need to carry more cornering speed and use more runout area.

I don't think it will be bad, there hasn't been a ton of chatter about it and they will likely break it into at least 2 sessions. There is a race this weekend so that will thin that herd a bit. And even if I can't get 6 people I can get a 3 punch for $81 ea.

Hi All, This is my baby. Last weekend was my first race weekend in the ARL series at Atlantic MotorSports park in Nova Scotia, Canada better know as "Shubie". I had so much fun and managed to come second in both my races in the mini-road racing class. Still working on my body positioning so far I have dropped 21 seconds in two weekends on the bike, here's hoping I find another 10. :D

July 9-10, better be there :)

I'm repainting the bike as we speak (in between coats) just for the occasion, hopefully I don't chuck it off the track this weekend at CVMA! From what you say, if there truly is a 30-bike 250 grid, this will be some serious fun

Kit-
A friend of mine was waitlisted for the NRS and he showed up and they let him in since the A group is generally smaller than the others. If you get in, DONT miss the in-between session meetings!

Question for you guys who have drilled holes holes by the rabbit ears...could you answer me this (see attached pic):

I have no idea why you've drilled holes in this area because there's nothing that I can see that would line up or bolt to on the fairing stay unless I'm missing something.

Please explain with pics if possible.

TIA

SPG

I've seen several options for upper fairing attachment. The factory metal piece that the mirrors attach to can work, I have welded a little tab to the front stay and have a Zeus clip on each side, I've seen zip ties threaded through the holes. My personal favorite is to not drill the holes, and install a little rubber bumper on the factory holes in the top of the fairing stay; the fairing rests on the bumpers, but can move in a crash and is that much faster to remove and install.

Nemesis
June 27th, 2011, 08:39 AM
I'll have to check the upper tab hole on the fairing stay though I don't recall it ever reaching that far into that pocket area.

I'm asking because my fairing stay is bent from my last crash and if I could somehow bend it back into that area then there's no need for me to buy a new one.

Sharkskins comes with the holes pre drilled, the mirror base mounts that attach to the stay fit in the holes, mine just sits on them I don't bolt or tie wrap them down.

From a racing expense view, a big fat YES!!!

It's also about having fun. If you're on a 600 and in the back of the pack...it's really no fun. Jump to a different class and if you're winning or on the podium...hell yeah it's FUN!

When I got bump up to expert last year I wasn't having as much fun as I did in 2009. As a novice I was running top 3-4 every race. I dropped couple of seconds just racing against guys in expert but to get on the podium I needed another 3 seconds. I was able to place consistently in the top 6-7 but right out of the money spot. The tires got more expense when you go faster.

The Ninja is way way way way way cheaper to race. I usually burn 20-25 gallons of fuel on the R6 and I the ninja I used maybe 5 gallons. Tires last for ever and its very close racing. I'm not riding around thinking I'm going to die every lap through Brainerd t1 and t2. I can day dream through those corner now.

Racer x

I ride in cross wind all the time. Or a head wind.Maxton almost never has a tail win

I have 60 psi. In the tires. When I hit the bumps on the track the bike lifts off the ground Spiking the RPM . And blowing sideways. It is hard to go in a streight line. There used to be a tree line at haf thack that would block the wind. Since the trees where removed it is more consistant but you have winds for the whole run. I am only going around 100 mph. The 200 mph riders have fun.

I plan on doing a race or two sometime next year w/WSMC. First time there during the NRS I pulled a 1:58, then a 1:53 in the 1st race, then a 1:47 2nd, 1:45 4th, & 1:43 in one of the last races I believe.

Still A LOT behind from the lap record.

Think this time around I could manage a 1:40 with all the experience I had racing with CVMA. Have you tried that track (Chuckwalla) out yet? If not, man it's a perfect track for the Ninja 250!!!

If a person wants to install the 2008 front wheel on the older Ninja it needs a special spacer. The Tail on my bike is a piece from Airtech that I modified to fit and look better.

Rattle cans ftw! Not the best lighting and it came out very very very far from perfect, but for a cheap first time attempt at painting a vehicle, it could have been worse.... Probably

NRS, Safety wire, and transponder are going to have to be pending a new job, though, so I guess it's technically still just an almost racebike >_<

Kinda hard to tell but from what I can make out of it it really looks like a nice paint scheme Tiff.

I would replace the black with a different color so the accents of the blue & red stands out more.

Zombiphone
September 8th, 2011, 03:10 PM
yeah, the colors are a bit more pronounced in proper sunlight, since they're both metallic/pearl type paint, but they ended up a little darker than I originally intended because I unthinkingly sprayed them on top of the black base instead of laying them down first. I wanted to do a black with two tone accents thing since I saw Iannone's bike in Qatar, but for the actual color layout I was wingin' it ^^;

I feel like it needs some manner of white pinstripes or something though just to break up the darkness a little bit. Not sure yet. Like everything I've ever drawn, painted, or designed, I'll probably be picking apart and wanting to tweak it every time I see it for as long as this bodywork survives :headshake:

Indeed! I just need the safety wire, and the transponder, [and a new source of income] and I think I'll have everything I need on the physical prep side of things. Well, that, and I actually need to ride Chuckwalla so I can actually pass their NRS and have a vague idea of how it runs.

I'll be there on the 23rd and I'm going to Pridmore's school next month to finally check it out. If it ends up not as fun as Willow though, I might go for WSMC instead. Either way, so long as everything goes according to plan, I'll be racing somewhere next year.

Tiffani, it's not how good your bike looks at the track but how good you make your bike look while going around the track. From the pics I've seen, you make the bike look like a real race bike. Great form around the corners.

Got tired of playing guitar hero all day? haha sorry to hear bout the job sitch!

Chuckwalla is WAY more fun that willow springs, the track is more challenging, the surface is better, and its equally fun both directions. Streets is still one of my fav tracks, but every time I go the condition of the track surface just ruins the experience.

Also its shaping up to be a large grid of 250s next year in CVMA, so you know my vote!

You look reasonably competent at painting. If you get the cheap purple paint gun from harbor freight, a small compressor you can paint pretty good.
I did this Ducati using that gun with dupont yellow, nason clear. < $100 total for materials. had a coupon for the gun $9.99
Painted it in the garage just hanging up some plastic to protect from overspray. make sure you invest the $15 in a half mask filter. isocyanides in the clear.

holes in the lower, upper, bent clip on and broken brake lever. cheap chinese ebay rearset did not bend, the frame did, shifter linkage bent.

yes it was my son. William. He did in fact redeem himself. He was practicing in the cold on road winners and pushed too hard. Picked up our dunlops Friday at the race. They stick so MUCH better I'm not sure he would have wrecked if they were on. Just couldn't get them before race day.
Frame sliders were on the list but not in the pre race budget. Putting bunch of 250 and ninja 600 parts on fleabay to go buy new sprockets and frame sliders. Next race is TWS 1mile straight...need more gearing

Honestly the Hotbodies fairings I heard were so poor actually held up decent for an 80mph low side. they just wore through quickly. I put several layers of new glass over the holes from the inside. wanna project the stator cover!
