View Full Version : Vortex clip-ons

Does anyone have any pics of a track bike with Vortex clip-ons? I was hoping to install some on mine, but it looks like I'll have to trim a lot more bodywork than I expected. Maybe I'm missing something, but there's less than an inch of clearance between the bottom of the grip and the Sharkskinz race fairing with the wheel straight ahead. It only gets worse when you try and turn the handlebars... I don't want to install them above the triple clamp, as I don't want to lower the front end at all.

These 37mm Vortex ones have 7 degrees of downtilt. It seems they also make ones with no downtilt, but not in the 37mm size, at least according to their web site.

Should I go with the Woodcraft ones instead?

Here's some pics of the Vortex clip-ons. As you can see, at least an inch or two would need to be trimmed off the bodywork right below them. This would eliminate the flat area up top, which I think would weaken the bodywork quite a bit.

They are supposed to go on top of the triple tree. That is why Wood Craft has the 1.5-2'' risers so they can clear the body work.

I went with Woodcraft for exactly that reason.

Ditto

A couple of guy even used the woodcrafts but wanted them lower so they relieved their bodywork to do so.

There seems to be a lot of 250's from Colorado.

Maybe tonight I'll try and mount them on top of the triple clamp before I give up on them. I'd only need to lower the front end about 1/2", so maybe that's not too bad...

The tops of the fork tubes were already sticking out above the top triple clamp about 1/2" when I removed the stock bars. Does that sound like the stock configuration? I'm not sure if the previous owner made any adjustments to the front.

The Woodcraft ones look like the better setup, for sure. Since they mount below the triple clamp, it looks like you could have plenty of adjustment range for the bar height, and still easily clear the bodywork at the maximum height.

I'm still interested in any pics of race bodywork trimmed to accomodate lower bars, though. It seems like that flat area on top would be the first thing to go, but I'm not sure if I want to do that.

I believe the stock height is 9-10 mm or 3/8" so 1/2" sounds a bit high, they will actually go up to 14mm .55in. with the stock setup.
I had terrible front tire wear with this set up so I am going to play with ride height front and rear to see if I can help that out.

Have you tried mounting the vortex clip ons on top of the triple tree? Do you still have clearance issues when mounting on top? I am looking to get the vortex clip ons as well..Let me know!

Yeah, I tried the top of the triple tree, and they still hit the bodywork--at least the levers do... I've got some pics at home, so let me know if you want me to post a few.

So I gave up on the Vortex ones and got some Woodcrafts instead. Even those have to pretty much be mounted as high as possible under the triple tree to allow the levers to fully clear.

I wouldn't mind trimming this race bodywork a bit, but it seems most of that flat area on top in front of the tank would have to be removed. If anyone has trimmed their bodywork this much, I'd like to see how it looks...

I mounted the vortex clipons under the triple and ended up cutting out a lot. It must have been a few inches down.

I do like the position better for full tuck riding but it doesn't look nearly has nice as if I didn't have to hack the crap out of the plastic.

When I get the bike back from getting vinyl I'll take a picture and post up if nobody else has.

Hello,

I would be interested in seeing how much you had to grind off the fairing. I'm looking to buy cliipons soon and would like to mount them under the top triple to get over the bike and it appears from what I've read here there is no other way to do it.

thanks

I'll try to remember to take a picture of that spot next time I'm in the garage.

I wonder if the Sharskinz bodywork sits higher because my hotbodies had pretty good clearance. Here's an old thread but you can see the clearance I have in these shots.

Chris @ LRN switched my order to woodcrafts from vortex so i wouldnt have to cut up the hotbodies, will post pics after the holidays when we start working on the bike

Bringing up an old thread.
So I picked up a set of clipons off of Craigslist for $60 figuring I could save a few bucks instead of getting the woodcrafts with the the 2.5" risers. The ones I got have about an inch rise, but won't clear the hotbody fairing without trimming the bodywork.
So now it's decision time. Hack up a good fairing or pony up for the woodcrafts.

Can anyone post up a picture of a trimmed fairing to help my decisions making process?

Thanks Doug

Thank you Peanut, that helps a ton. Looks like I will be doing some cutting tomorrow.

Can you post one more picture from above look down?
