View Full Version : New Tires are Slick

I had my rear tire changed today from the stinky IRC to a nice Dunlop GT501 and I wasn't aware that I should take it easy for a while until the tire wears a bit.

So I was turning left from a traffic light onto a three lane highway, going for the left lane. After coming around the concrete divider I gunned it like I usually do and my baby Ninja spun the poop out of my new tire causing me to lowside and get closer to the road than I would have liked to. I slid on my butt for maybe 15 feet after hitting the pavement with my elbow and hip.

After the initial shock wore off in a few seconds I got up and picked up my baby to find the left side fairings pretty rashed up, the footpeg/shifter broken off, the blinker was a few feet behind the bike next to the footpeg, and the spring came off of my kickstand. nice folks behind me stopped and got out, asked if I was ok and helped me walk the bike to the side of the road.

I had to call my dad and shove the Ninja into his minivan since I couldn't ride it home with no footpeg or shifter, something I had to do two years ago on my first lowside.

Other than that myself and the bike are ok, parts have been ordered and the repair process has begun.

oops...yeah...it takes a little while to scrub them in. But once you do...the GT501's stick like glue. Shame about your mishap, but you'll like them once they do get broke in.

I'm sorry to hear about your crash, I'm very surprised the dealer employees didn't tell you to take it easy. There are tons of posts and a lot of threads about this if I remember correctly. Hopefully the repairs get done quickly so your back on the road. Goodluck.

Sorry to hear about this; glad you're OK. Unfortunately this is a pretty common mishap; the subject description you chose for this thread is spot-on.

Yea, the guy who stopped to help me was actually at the dealer as I was leaving and he said, "Didn't they tell you to take it easy for the first 100 miles or so?" But I think he could tell that they didn't.

Wiping the tires down with a brake cleaner soaked rag helps to get that coating off.

That's an interesting idea I may have to use when I put on my new tires. Any opinion on the sandpaper idea as well?

You got IRC's on an '08? Or you replaced the originals with IRC's?

Sorry to hear about that. They should have warned you about that at the shop.

Some shops around here stamp the bill you get for a tire change saying to go easy the first 100 or so miles. Sorry to hear that.

Didnt the bike come off the showroom floor with new tires?

Just curious, why do you believe that stock IRCs stink?

I've had some slippy experiences with the IRC's in the rain. My '09 came stock with them and I haven't had a chance to really ride with any other tire so I can't make an accurate comparison.
