Found this little video and just kinda had to go :wtf:

Good example of how you can't control everything that can cause an accident. I mean how are you going to prevent that with "skill and awareness"?

One of the pit crew just lost their job.

Maybe, but think about this for second; the rim came apart most likely from either a defect or metal fatigue. The naked eye can't always see those w/o help. Just a possibility that when checking the rim it looked fine only to have something wrong with it that couldn't be seen. :idunno:

Geeeez.... They'll have to start X-raying rims now for stress cracks.

That was a strange one. The wheel spokes themselves sheared off. Some folks said that the team was running the wheels for too long, but it's still a very rare catastrophic failure.

More info here (http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-racing-news-wsb/maxime-berger-loses-wheel-in-crash/17617.html) and here (http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=363251).

Luckily it was at a relatively low-speed corner, so he escaped without injury. Must have felt particularly strange from the saddle...

I kinda thought single-sided swingarms wouldn't be so common if we were anywhere near the limits of the materials.

Wow... that definitely isn't something you see everyday  Can't imagine how that would have felt at all :noidea:

The swingarm was fine - this was a wheel failure.

The swingarm was fine - this was a wheel failure.

But the required rigidity also involves the wheel.

I'm not sure I follow. :idunno: The wheel failure had nothing to do with whether its axle was bolted up to a single-sided or dual-arm swingarm. The spokes themselves on the OZ wheel sheared off for some reason that wasn't made public, whether earlier crash damage, microcracks during manufacture, or any other possible cause.

Sad news today about Maxime Berger, the rider who had one of the weirdest wheel failures captured on video few years back.
