Casey Stoner has topped the first session of free practice for the MotoGP class at Valencia, grabbing the fastest time in the final minutes on a drying but still difficult track. The Australian ended ahead of his Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa, the Spaniard finishing the session in 2nd. The Repsol Hondas led the Marlboro Ducatis, Valentino Rossi finishing in 3rd in front of Nicky Hayden, the Ducatis always performing better under damp conditions than in the dry.
Loris Capirossi, bearing Marco Simoncelli's number 58 on the fairing of his bike, set the 5th fastest time after leading for part of the session, while Ben Spies took 6th, ahead of Randy de Puniet and Toni Elias.
The circuit is drying out very slowly, and the rain appears to be holding off, so this afternoon's session should be held under slight better conditions.
