Any chances on activating tapatalk (http://www.tapatalk.com/)... its free server side.. and cheap for phones... seems to be a great program...

Feedback from vbulletin forum owners is mixed on the tool. Some do appreciate it, some aren't as enthused (poor coding practices such as sending login information in the clear, forcing all traffic through their own network, requiring forum users to pay for it and none of the revenue actually comes back to the forum).

Would people be interested in paying $3 for slicker access to this site over the mobile network? (keep in mind I wouldn't be charging it, it goes straight to those folks)

Not too many forums support it. The only forum I've been able to use it on is AndroidCentral.com. But I post more to your forum and to another forum I'm a part of for my Altima, Nissanclub.com. Wish they would support it also.

So I've recently been looking for a way to manage all of my forums in one app on my captivate and found that there is only one app...tapatalk. The problem is forums aren't visible on tapatalk unless they have the tapatalk plugin installed on the forum. I was hoping that the admin would perhaps register and do this? It would be awesome to be able to use the ninjette forums while on the go :D

http://www.tapatalk.com/plugin.php

I'm not really trying to advertise them...but in a way i guess i am? lol...sucks when theres a monopoly.

Please say yes and install it :D

It's basically an app that allows you to manage multiple forums at once. It comes in handy if you're on the go a lot...you don't have to wait for the web browser to load, sign in multiple times, etc...

Would a PM suffice?

It would if I knew who was in charge of coding the site.

Not going to happen. Huge security issues, starting with their architecture. All information coming from the forum site itself goes through their own servers in China, including authentication info. PriusChat was compromised a few months ago due to a Tapatalk bug, and started infecting their users with malware that was installed due to the problems.

Alex
October 14th, 2010, 09:38 AM
It's still not going to happen with the architecture they are running. The security problems they've had are examples of what can happen, but the more fundamental problem is the architecture itself. Their entire business model relies on aggregating forums and pulling all traffic through their own servers to serve ads and run analytics. Feel free to research it, but IMO any forum owner that installs it isn't thinking this through particularly well.

there is an android app you can view this site with, the web browser. That in combination with subscription to thread should work for any non obsessive person.

or maybe the fact that i'd like to be able to view multiple forums at once would be better...and btw the stock browser blows, that's what opera's for.

A nice mobile version of the site would be nice. But tapatalk sucks. Not only is it a paid app and ad supported, its functionality is limited and that can be very frustrating when you have to switch to a browser.

Alex
January 5th, 2012, 07:07 AM
vBulletin just put in a mobile skin in their latest 4.x release, so when we do get to that version of the platform, I can dump the hacky mobile skin here and go to the stock fully supported one. It's new, and I haven't heard much feedback about it yet. Unfortunately the feedback on the vbulletin smartphone app development platform has been very poor, and the developers they had working on it seem to have jumped ship, so I have held off on spending the cash to get it if it's going to go away soon anyway. I had bought a mac just to do that development, so now I have no excuse in the near term for needing it, other than I really like the look of that tiny laptop. :)

I really don't have to much trouble with tapatalk. I bought it over 2 years ago when it was 99 cents on the market. I mainly use It for other car forums I'm on and it seems to work for what it does. I will admit though I didn't know about those security concerns that where brought up in those linked posts. I may have to reconsider my options here.

I had otherwise never tried this site on my phones browser but it actually doesn't work to bad.

Haha, what did you use to post it?

Just the mobile version of the site, from my ancient blackberry.

That would not be that hard to do actually. The HTTP/HTTPS layer has many libs allowing you to pull data from the server writing almost no code of your own, parsing out returned data wouldnt be that hard either.

vBulletin has RSS feed capability, they are intentionally disabled on this site (and others), as the goals here are for active participation, not just remote consumption. There are a number of ways to improve the mobile experience, and they will get here as well. The easy one is the better mobile templates available once we move to the 4.X platform. Further down the road, I'd be happy to work on specific mobile apps to support this site. I had intended to do this a few months ago, but there have been some teething pains with the vbulletin app development toolkit, and I'd prefer to wait a few versions.

I would prefer tapatalk and let some company get into my info on a bike forum then not having it.

People are just too scared of all these so called security risks all the time.

Do you really think you are that important or have anything worth hacking into?

Everything that is worth anything...ie MONEY is protected even if they hack into your account. So let them take it...I will get it back no big deal.

Any financial company fully backs all your transactions, if their is fraud you don't pay for it the company takes the loss which is just written off at the end of the year as a deduction anyways. I worked in a bank and with various financial firms for 12 years. Online banking gets hit with fraud all the time...you contact your bank...they make you whole and then the research it. No big deal

The other board I am on is www.chicagolandsportbikes.com this board has a majority of IT personal on it anywhere from computer techs to CEO of their own software company. I think if tapatalk was that bad they would have banded it by now.

Hi Alex,

Question, have you revisit this idea lately? I understand you've had some security concerns in the past and I personally don't know if they have been fixed or clear or not. I also know other forums use the app and use the plugin, I have personally already payed for the app and use it.

Just wanted to ask if this has been re-visited since 2012 :) thanks.

AFAIK, the model hasn't changed. All traffic is run through their servers. Separate from the security and architecture concerns, they should be paying forum owners to use their system.

Alex
March 10th, 2015, 11:57 AM
A few years ago I thought it would a be a done deal, with later versions of vBulletin providing strong mobile support. That didn't pan out, with the later versions of vBulletin going backwards in many ways, so we are actually still on 3.X here, many years later. On other forums, I've migrated fully away from this software, and that software has better built-in support for mobile.

I continue to have concerns about Tapatalk, for some of the reasons described earlier in this thread, and while I think it would be nice to develop a mobile-specific app for ninjette, I don't see it happening anytime in the near future. I'm somewhat grateful that with tablets and phones getting uber-huge and detailed screens over the past few years, one side benefit is that "normal" web pages are looking better and better on mobile, without as much of a need to develop mobile-specific skins. I knew laziness would pay off at some point. :)
