Here is why body positioning and all that greatness comes in handy...when your back end comes out on you.

I watched this race and Hacking is one heck of a rider. Part luck, part skill, all awesome. :)

body positioning saved him because once the bike started going out, he most likely drove his left knee into the ground to keep the bike upright and, well if you saw pictures of it, he actually had his forearm on the ground pushing up on the bike as well.

There was a whole lot of luck going on there, but the body position is what was actually made recovery possible. You have bad position, you'd never have a chance of saving something like that.

ha the guy falling off the back and then getin back on is pretty funny

Apex
July 24th, 2009, 07:23 AM
It kind of makes sense that it is fake. After he got off the bike, it kept altering its movements. It dips left (right visually) then back up right again, and repeats. Once that sucker is rolling on its own, and it dips to a side, it will continue to fall that way until it hits the ground. It would need some kind of steering input to right itself, which of course it didn't have. :)

I just don't see how you can get back on the seat without giving the wrong handlebar inputs if you don't have anything to push your feet off of.

The only problem with saving the bike, after a near crash like those, is the squishy feeling in the seat of your leathers.

These "rights" only happen on rare occassions. Mamola has some of the wildest crashes in racing (which he didn't save).

CC Cowboy

When you are racing you aways want to turn around and look before you're going to crash so you know if someone is going to run you over.

Kevin2109
May 14th, 2011, 04:12 PM
Oh! that makes sense, thanks for clearing that up  So he knew at the end he wasnt going to make that corner then?

CC Cowboy
May 14th, 2011, 04:21 PM
Kevin, if you watch any racing on TV these guys turn around and look how close the guy is behind them (remember the no mirror post). They try to do it at a safe place on the track but as you can see in the video that isn't always the case. It is stupid to do since the pit board will tell them where they stand but it's hard not to look and see who is behind you and how close they are.

KazMan
May 31st, 2011, 04:30 PM
He was looking back to see who was around before he started the big drift, unfortunately the bike didn't understand it was supposed to be a drift and not a pitch...lol If I recall correctly, that year on the Cagiva, Randy wasn't exactly thrilled with the Pirelli tires, thus it became a big smokey drift show at most races as he couldn't run up front for many reasons.

cbdallas
March 5th, 2012, 06:41 AM
I think it has a lot to do with having presense of mind to let the bike do what it wants to do when you realize it's gotten out of shape. In that last video, I think he probably removed power from the rear wheel, and also resisted braking so the tire had the best chance of re-gaining grip. While most of us instinctively use braking, which can sometimes make things worse, he just let the bike correct itself. Not always an option when you're in traffic, but it's the perfect response on a track.

While racing ccs super twins at Hartland Park I got to see the guy in front of me almost highside. He kissed his front fender in the process of saving it! I would have bailed! Oh and one lap later he passed me and checked out! Now that is some big balls!!!!!!

Looks a bit staged... And is it just me, or does it look like the two other riders deliberatly cross path between him and the bike? It wasn't their racing line, it just looked reckless.

January 27th, 2013, 02:14 PM
Looks staged to me too, the two other riders could of stayed on the outside or inside. It is a cool video though :)

rojoracing53
January 27th, 2013, 02:18 PM
Could it have been staged? Yes

But that would still require them to crash in a way that the bike went strait and not into the wall. I can't think there would be many attempts to get it right :)

As for the riders swerving. Well from their point of view there trying to predict the path of travel as well as getting on the correct side of the track for the next turn so in an instant the path they took seeming like the best bet.

Don't analyze the video just watch it smile a bit that's what it there for :D
