View Full Version : Fender modification

I really tried to live with the stock rear fender. My plan was to leave this bike as close to stock as feasible. But, putting the bike up on a rear stand was challenging because the darned fender was so long that it interferes with the Pit Bull handle, and it needs to be bent out of the way to lift the bike. Or, it takes 2 people to do it, one to straighten up the bike and the other to carefully put the stand under the spools.

Not liveable. So, I took my handy-dandy hacksaw, removed the license plate, and sliced it cleanly off behind the plate. I managed to keep it pretty clean and level. I was worried it would look terrible, but the functionality was needed for me. Turns out that it looks fine (and now works fine). No need to buy a fender eliminator kit as far as I can tell, and with the new seat cowl that we just added, I'm perfectly happy with how the rear of the bike looks. I love this little ninjette.

Looks like you only removed the tip of the tail, right? Held a reflector at the bottom? I think the only reason Kawasaki had the fender extended so low was because in some states a rear red reflector is required to be in a certain spot.

Looks good man! Still has a factory look. I don't like complete fender removal. As a matter of fact, I just ordered a factory fender for my 07. I cut the original about 2 days after I got the bike. Did not completely remove it, but I realize how valuable it is in wet weather.

Yup, I just took the end off (from about halfway in the middle of the license plate). Here's what it used to look like:

http://www.ciurczak.com/photos/303065940_4EMSr-L.jpg

With that rear reflector gone, it probably is a little less than legal, but if it's a concern you can pick up red reflective license plate bolts to meet the regulations.

lol... I deserve no credit. :D

When I decided to chop mine, I read HKr1's post and copied it to the letter. Credit should go fully to Kerry... and also, when something goes wrong because of it, he's fully to blame, too! :happy130:

Thanks Alex, I use a pit bull stand just like yours and have been cursing that fender as well. I'm going to follow your lead on this one.

I have the same as you Alex. It really cleans up the rear of the bike and I think it makes the fender much less noticeable in person.

I cut the bottom 4" off the fender and added a square reflector that is not as chinzy as the stock one. I rounded the whole thing off with a file, and it looks quite decent.

You just make the cut and bracket yourself, out of the stock fender. because you have to cut to mount this tail tidy anyways. So buying this tail tidy will be like paying alot of money for a licence plate light.

I could be wrong as I haven't actually installed it yet, but I have it sitting in front of me right now. It comes with very detailed instructions and there is no mention of cutting.
Its a very slick piece and the integrated LED number plate light is very nice too.

Hmmm, I dunno what to say, except that mine is definitely an original RG Racing product, as I went to them directly and bought it.

The indicators on mine are different, but that's because I'm going all out for ultra bright LEDs and those are Oxford's Nano LED indicators. You wouldn't believe how something so small can be so bright...

here's a pic for a size comparison

http://www.oxprod.com/photo.php?maxx=180&id=1047

Without having actually fitted it yet, I still find it real easy to recommend this tail tidy. Alot of my friends have recommended them to me and you can just tell by looking at or holding their stuff. You should see their crash protectors up close, makes those intuitive sliders look like toothpicks.
It's quality. Even the packaging is the nuts.

If you're not sure about the product on ebay, you could try shopping from them directly

www.rg-racing.com (£87.11 + delivery charges)

or you could try

http://www.intobikes.co.uk (£87.99 + delivery charges)

Elle, Nice job on the fender. I went out into the garage and looked at the tail light on my 08 Ninja and wondered if a separate plate light would really be necessary. Suppose one drilled a hole in the bottom of the tail light lens and enlarged it to an oval with a Dremel and then super glued a piece of clear plastic to the inside of the tail light lens. Would not the light from the tail light illuminate the license plate? I recall that my 1956 NSU had a tail light that served two functions with a clear panel at the bottom.

Sounds easy.......Guess it would be hard for some people without a garage or tools thou.

got it installed. looks great. overall i am really happy with the end product.

however, the LED light housing doesn't stick out much and it wasn't shining on the plate as much as i wanted... most of it was hitting the top of the plate frame. i bought a clear bubble plate cover and that solved that issue. there are 4 exposed nuts in the wheel well. not too visible, but i am going to paint them with black touch-up paint to blend them in more.

the instructions.... man it sucked!!!! pretty confusing. it said to connect a piece only for me to find out that i had to take it apart again to do a later step. also, it said to refer to a picture that wasn't even there. after a while i was just winging it. got some "spare parts", but oh well.

it was a direct replacement kit. the only cutting i had to do was to cut the stock license plate light wiring. i re-used the bulb-side stock connector and wired that to the kit's light. it included the connectors and stuff.

anyways, i am done and it looks REALLY good.... i am happy. plus i found my missing (didn't even realize they were gone... or even what they were) passenger seat bumper stoppers hiding under my rear fairings. :D

Whats the other side of them look like? You know, put them in the other way(nut up top). Or get some button heads to make them flush.

Looks nice thou! Deff way to go if you had to buy one

Agreed. Looks way good, but some more flush bolts might clean it up ever so slightly more. And painting the bolts black is a good idea. Not to get off topic, but has anyone painted the silver fuel cap? I'm thinkin' about painting it black. Any ideas?

thanks for the compliment and suggestion. it would look definitely look cleaner if i flipped them around. i will investigate that further. i did briefly think about that initially, but then quickly dismissed and forgot about that option. it was getting dark and i just wanted to get my bike back together.

Is the TARGA fender elim. a kit? I have never heard of it....

Yes it is a kit. It's about $90 with shipping included. Comes with a black anodized aluminum plate to fill in the area where the stock fender is removed. You'll also have to splice the license plate LED and turn signals' wires to the stock wiring.

I used the plate bracket that came stock, and then just fashioned some L brackets to hold it to the 2 large bolts underneath the tail.
And Shhhh there is no plate light right now, just the glow of the tail light. LOL

I would bet that if you took your trusty Dremel and drilled an oval hole at the bottom of your tail light and took a clear piece of plastic and super glued it over the hole on the inside, you would be perfectly legal. Did that on my Norton Cafe Racer.

had my nikon d40 for a while but i still can't figure out the features, so i don't know how to take pics in low lighting. i did flip the bolts around as suggested and i think it looks great! it blends in for a more finished look. doesn't really need to be painted anymore.. idk. i still might. thanks HKr1 for the suggestion. sometimes the obvious solution needs to be pointed out by someone with a fresh pair of eyes. now i am extremely happy with this product.

my turn signals look a bit droopy in the rear shot, but that is how they were when it was stock.

thanks people. :)

jhaqui, yeah the kit comes with everything you need. not sure about the resistors for the LED plate light. if there are, it is built in. if there aren't, it doesn't seem to be needed.

the only mod to the bike needed is the cutting and stripping of the stock plate light wiring. it comes with the wire connectors and even shrink wrap tubing.

if you are planning on changing out your stock rear turn signals, this would be an excellent time... but it is also designed to work with the stock signals as well.

my complaint is that the instructions were confusing to me. also, you may need to get a clear bubble plate cover. the light will hit the plate if using a regular frame, but not as well. other than that, it is a GREAT kit.

props to kerry and greg for introducing me to this kit

does anyone know if i need to have a license plate light as a law in california?

Alex
February 8th, 2009, 12:58 AM
Yup, it's the law.

from: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc24601.htm

License Plate Lamp
24601. Either the taillamp or a separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear license plate during darkness and render it clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear. When the rear license plate is illuminated by a lamp other than a required taillamp, the two lamps shall be turned on or off only by the same control switch at all times.

Amended Ch. 1313, Stats. 1965. Effective September 17, 1965.

Not that I would advocate breaking the law, but how many there actually have a rear license plate light and is it strictly enforced, Alex?

Alex
February 8th, 2009, 01:06 AM
Nothing's illegal until you get caught. Here in northern california, it's not uncommon for LEO's to write fix-it tickets for missing plate lights, illegal blinkers, illegal plate mount, missing reflectors, and any number of other violations. Sometimes those are written instead of the speeding ticket. Sometimes those are written in addition to whatever other ticket caused you to be pulled over. And on real bad days, sometimes they patrol the parking lots of known biker hangouts and write tickets en masse for all the violations they can find on the bikes in the lot.

There are certainly more serious things that LEO's can and do worry about, but why give them any excuse at all to hassle you? LED lights for the plate are a piece 'o cake to install if needed.

EDIT: Didn't see your second question. All of my bikes have rear plate lights, including the ones with fender eliminators. If I had to hazard a guess on how many bikes in general with eliminator kits still have plate lights, I'd probably say half. But I wouldn't recommend riding at night without one, it's like a beacon from miles away that screams "Please pull me over for a chat".

HKr1
February 8th, 2009, 02:31 PM
Yeah, they really mean "White Light" also < got stopped twice for Red plate lights.

Cali really sucks for vehicle violations, but most of them are just fix its. Thought there were a few you could only fix three times thou........ thinking one was exhaust? < been so long now.

You should see the stuff down here in Florida, its in there laws... But they(cops) just dont give a crap I guess. I always think these people wouldnt get 1 mile in Cali with out getting pulled over.. LOL :)

I liked the way Alex removed his wheele bar so that was the first mod to the new 2009 and thought I would document where the cut was made.

First the stock look

I used some painters tape to decide where I wanted to make the cut and provide an easy to follow line. I decided to make the cut right where the tail narrows down.

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=56&pictureid=573

Then just to be sure I remounted the plate. An old habit from when I worked construction; measure twice, cut once.

Okay...so i got thinking today that i want to eliminate the rear fender (already did the basic cut like the very first post in the thread) I just don't like the way it sticks out with the plate light and everything on there. So......here are my thoughts....is it possible and do ya think it will work? If so I can do a DIY for it.

I want to take the fender (as pictured above) and use that as a mold for a fiberglass piece, I will drill holes in the side to incorporate 2 LED strips for blinkers. I would just paint the whole thing black. Might even be a possiblitly to do the black top piece out of fiberglass. Then I would just mount the plate with the "L" brackets like the others have done. So what do you think? Could it work?

I am trying to keep cost down so Carbon fiber isn't an option ;) Anywho, I will probably get it all done then just throw a few coats of some good spray semi-gloss black spray paint. Anybody got any suggestions for some rear flush mounts (preferably LED')? Something small that is still bright. I will do some more searching and let you all know if I end up doing it. And If i do the DIY will be on its way.

No need for fabricating it all over again in fiberglass?
you can drill holes for blinkers in this aswell

you dont need L-brackets btw, you can just drill two small new holes through the plate and fender, and bolt it into place. :)

I understand. When you sand it down and paint it in black, its going to look a little better than the cut stock ones for sure(if you do not sand and repaint the stock fender, as i didnt do).

When your making it in glassfiber you could probably get rid of those stock blinkers mountings, and just drill in some new led-ones :)

I took the signal and made four cuts with my dremel. One cut on each side to get rid of the middle portion of the light and two angled cuts (very carefully to not cut through the wires) to remove the excess portion. That left me with the shorter light stalk and the portion that is used to screw it into the tail. Then with a glue of your choice (mine was a plastic glue, but the name has slipped my mind) glue them together. Use some to hold them together overnight and your done. I hope this didn't sound too confusing.

The signals I used are front flush signals for an R1. I just found them on ebay under "R1 flush led euro signals". If I flip my bracket around I can still mount it under the tail light. Just in case.

^^^ How visible are those from behind?

The only thing stopping me from getting flush mounts on the front are the lack to options for the rear. This option looks great! Did you have to cut a hole in the tail to mount?

They are very visible at night but on a really bright day they can be alittle hard to see. What I like is that you can also see them very well from the side. I did have to drill a hole in the tail though. I thinking about ordering another set for the front to match.

Where you gonna do it up front?

This spot might fit the one you already have. When I saw Scorpielle's picture, I immediately thought this would be a great spot for a flushmount - where the reflection looks like a turnsig. Too bad I don't have the sack to start drilling into my baby :(

After over a year of owning the bike, finally did the full fender chop (previously, I just cut the bottom half)

I just used a short hacksaw. There was also some drilling of the L brackets and license plate & license plate bracket in order to get the bolts and license plate light to fit.

Also smoothed out the bottom with sandpaper and sprayed some black window tint I had from a hobby shop to help color the part I cut to blend in with the rest of the fender.

The light was a bit expensive, more than I wanted to spend, but they seemed the most practical. Comes with 2 in the pack but I only used one. I'll see how well it lights up at night and add the other if necessary. I kind of dont like the wire showing, but it's a pretty short wire and I'm too lazy to buy more wire to make it longer in order to make it easier to tape up and hide.

to keep the signals from drooping, you need to use some sort of "washer" between the signal grommet and the frame. I used a couple of small tie wraps to act as washers in there to get the signals to stick straight out.

It will work fine if you are still logged into kawiforums. If you're not a kawiforums member, or haven't logged in recently, it won't work.

To demonstrate this, go to kawiforums and hit log out. Then go to your browser options and delete all cache files. Quit your browser. Re-open your browser and come back to this thread, and you'll see the red X's.

You can't assume that everyone coming to this site is already logged into KF as well, though certainly a decent portion tend to be.

I put the ties on the inside of the frame between it and the rubber grommet for the signals. I had to use 2 zipped together in series as I only had thin short ones. The longer, thicker ones wouldn't fit properly. You'll see once you get in there.

i think this is the same kit. the turn signals seem pretty dim during the daytime. idk... maybe it is just the pic. it does seem like a pretty well thought out package though. i wonder why the ebay one is so cheap? on the website it seems to be going for $150.

edit: oh.. this is a different kit. the one they are selling on ebay has crappy pics on this site too.

this is the higher kit. yeah, so i don't know how the ebay one attaches. this kit comes with the fiberglass mount.

but in either case, not sure if cars would see those turn signals in the daytime.

I used a combination of a Dremel, saw, X-Acto knife, and lighter; Dremel and saw to cut, X-Acto knife to shave off the melted plastic from the Dremel, and a lighter to smooth the plastic when it's all done.

I'll post pics soon.

how?
I used a piece of metal 2 3/4L x 2 1/2W. Set the tail lite bolt plate & plate bracket on each end. Marked there holes, marked in-between both plates(for bend). Drilled & bent @ 90deg.

Also HOW ? :O

From an old post of mine C/P:

Off the top of my head, just to give you an "Idea" of how.......

1- Remove rear seat/cowl.
2- Remove both L/R black side panels.
3 - Remove front seat
4 - Remove turn sig bracket bolts
5 - Remove turn sig screws.
6 - Remove brake light bolts & un plug tail light/plate light.
7- Remove Left rear cowling
8 - Remove Right rear cowling
9 - Un plug turn sig wires(next to battery). Pull them out towards sigs & remove sigs.
10 - Separate brake light from fender/ two tabs, Remove fender/tail light.
11- Drill out rivets to separate turn sig brackets from fender.
12- Trim fender. < Carefully!
13 - On fender remove plastic around turn sig mounts, use as washer's on inside of bracket with grommet.
14 - Mount turn sigs on brackets, with grommet/ plastic washer you made.
15 - Run turn sig wires thru fender / install fender.
16 - Bolt up turn sig brackets(turn sigs)
17- Run turn sig wires & plug in.
18 - Install tail light.
19 - Install R/L rear cowlings.
20 - Install front seat.
21 - Install black side panels L/R.
22 - Make L bracket to fit tail light mounting plate & plate bracket.
23 - Install bracket & plate bracket mount(plate bracket goes up-side down).
24 - plug in tail lite.
25- replace rear seat/cowl.
26- Mount plate.

I used a weller soldering iron to cut the plastic, they have those plastic tips. Then a die grinder with 3m pad to smoooth it out.

If it has LED turn signals, you need to change the stock flasher relay to an electronic flasher or add resistors to the wiring. More info here (http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15282&highlight=proton).

Does anyone who has done the original mud (just chopping the mud guard below the factory license plate location) ride in the rain? I ride rain or shine, and I don't want road grime all over my back and seat if I do it. What are your experiences with this?

wayanlam

my experience with fender chop: muddy!

it sprays up onto the back light, and back seat. it doesnt reach far enough to hit my back, but i think if i had a big backpack it might get dirty. when doubling up with my gf, she gets a good dose of mud, hehe...

basically you have to keep the original fender if you want to avoid getting muddied!

I kind of dont like the wire showing, but it's a pretty short wire and I'm too lazy to buy more wire to make it longer in order to make it easier to tape up and hide.

last pic, on the left side, just shows that I used the stock connector to help connect the light's wires

quick question how do the LED lights hook up do they have a clip on them?

Here's mine! I used a little metal hack saw, worked great. Measuring took the most time =p

Did mine last night. Didn't have L-brackets so I cut a tab out of the existing fender to mount the stock plate bracket. Also, drilled out the stock blinker mount rivets (hated the hooks) and used the reflector bracket to relocate the blinkers.

It's a bit wider, angled and lower than I'd like, but I'll eventually get L-brackets when I have more time to redo it. AND it costs me nothing.

how hard was that install? I saw that one and was thinking about getting it?

Not sure if those turn signals are far enough a part as well for CA law...

I heard they had to be 9 in. apart? Someone correct me if im wrong?

It took me days to do mine. I'm not sure why, but I found it took me annoyingly long to do everything. Taking off the fairings for the first time took me a while, and so did hooking everything back up. I ran into a few speed bumps when certain things didn't fit, or bolts were too long or short so I had to go to the hardware store a few times to get everything I needed. I used simple L brackets with some bolts, washers and locking nuts. For the plate lights I spliced 2 LED bolts together and soldered them onto the original wiring with the stock harness.

Here are the results:

I think the French based company, Ermax, has a nice looking fender eliminator (although their term is plate holder).

http://www.silverstonemotor.com/boutique_us/images_produits/sdp-250rn-v-600-2.jpg

Taken off their web site:

"LED plate light and standard plate holder are provided
The special SUP09 alu plate holder (see pictures) is included
TRI led indicators are available in option for 38,40€ more
Fastening kit and fitting instructions are provided
Many colors available"

I hear ya, loud and clear.

I like Ermax's "plate holder" also. In fact, it might be one of my favorite fender eliminator designs.

I forgot to add that there is a US distributor for Ermax called Frog Specialties. They only have two items for the Ninja 250R and not in stock. They charge slightly more than what the French web site offers them at. Note: these two parts are not presently listed on FS's web site.

I contacted Philippe with FS about this eliminator and here was his reply minus the photos: (Their fender eliminator is competitively priced but their bubble screens aren't.)

Hello

Here are the photos of the 2 items we have for Ninja 250.

We have none of these parts in stock and they must be ordered. ETA 3-4 weeks to us in So Cal.

Fender Eliminators are $140 painted. Turn Signals are $40 additional. They are stick on flush mounted LEDs.
Dual Bubble screens are $115 in clear, grey, bronze ; $125 in lite black, dark black or any color

Sincerely
Philippe

In my case I'd have to pay customs in ordering direct if it even arrived and that's a BIG if!

Time to ask my Parisian friend to do a French Connection for me! ;)

I found Ermax's company web site and looked at their pdf catalog. It is fairly extensive and they appear to be a large company dealing with aftermarket products. Unfortunately, not many are for the little Ninja. Still, worth a look/see.

Here's the link gents: (in English)

Damn that looks freakin good!! Combine that with the integrated tail and flushmount signals from Tri, and you got yourself a darn good looking bike with good turn signals and a lit plate!!

Now I want a 250 J just so I can buy one of these

Not to outdone by the French, a nice looking undertail/seatcowl/fender eliminator/micro plate combo made by Pyramid Plastics in England. Mentioned before on the forum I thought it would be nice comparing the two in this thread.

It's much more expensive at £178.46 GBP ($276.11 USD)! By comparison, Hotbodies undertail's list price is $229.95.

I did the same modification. The only thing I did was get closer to the natural bend in the fender so it looks clean. Used a Rockwell Oscillating tool and it was super easy. Maybe 30-60 mins because I'm a perfectionist

As I have a friend living in France who was coming to South America I decided to purchase one of the Ermax´s fender eliminators. What a nightmare it was dealing with this company! First, I tried contacting them through their web site but they never responded. Then by email, again no response. I wrote to Frog Specialties about this and he got in touch with them on my behalf and finally heard from Ermax. Philipe with Frog told me that Ermax would not sell direct but this turned out not to be true. I placed my order with them giving them plenty of lead time but they missed the deliver by date because they needed additional paperwork filled out and faxed to them. I placed my order using my credit card but Ermax needed a ¨promise to pay¨ agreement form signed and received before they could ship it. Why a credit card with approval wouldn't suffice is beyond me. As a result I had to wait an additional two months for another courier to bring it to me.

Once received I was eager to install the fender eliminator. It installed fairly easy but did need a little tweaking to fit just right due to my integrated tail light. I purchased the Kawasaki green version along with the LED lights. It also has LED lights for the license plate. The license plate lights are nice but the turn signal LEDs that come with the Ermax fender eliminator aren't very bright. Compared to the LEDs in the CustomLED integrated taillight they are dull. The exterior turn signals on the Ermax look nice but had I known they would be that dull I would not have purchased them.

With the green Ermax fender eliminator and Scotts rear hugger accenting the black rear end on my Ninja it looks very nice. I can post photos if someone wants to see it but it looks just like the company´s photos already posted in this thread.

My recommendation for anyone considering buying an Ermax fender eliminator is to purchase it from Frog Specialities in California. It will save you time and be less expensive.

I dumped my bike going very slowly on a gravel driveway so took it into body shop for repair and repainting. After I picked up the bike I noticed that my license plate bracket wasn't positioned properly and upon closer inspection discovered to my horror that the entire bracket on the Ermax fender eliminator was broken. Apparently the body shop backed my moto into something which cracked the ABS housing. I replaced it with a new Ermax fender eliminator but this time positioned my license plate bracket just below the eliminator, drilling two holes in the undertail.

I would not recommend anyone using the plate location that Ermax has designed into their eliminator because it will break when there is enough force applied to the plate, which surprisingly isn't much!

I purchased the replacement through the US Ermax distributor, Frog Specialty in California, and it cost much less than ordering the same part directly from the manufacture.
