Seriously... sometimes we take safety gear too lightly when riding. It's either too hot, or too expensive, or too ______.

Many young riders will forgo needed equipment because they lack the funds to suit up properly and they suffer the consequences for their hasty decisions early in their riding career by getting hurt due to insufficient coverage.

Anyway, how much protection do you have? What's in your closet that you use when you ride and do you wear AGATT?

I use, every time I ride...

Helmet- Shoei RF1000
Earplugs- 3M
Jacket/Pants- Aerostich one piece Roadcrafter suit in Hi Viz yellow
Gloves- Held "Steve" gloves
Boots- Oxtar Matrix 2
Pants- icon jeans with kevlar reinforcement patches

AGATT

So, come on, fess up...

What's in Your Closet???
:wtf:

Helmet: BELL Apex
Jacket: TourMaster Intake mesh & Texport leather
Gloves: Teknic SMT
Pants: Cortech DSX Denim (with CE-Approved knee armor)
Boots: AlpineStars SMX-2
KNEE PROTECTION: THOR FORCE KNEE/SHIN GUARDS ***

*** Had an accident in June which ended in knee surgery. Since then I will not ride without some form of knee protection. Either my Cortech pants with knee armor or my Thor knee/shin protectors. Think about it, the chances of your knees hitting the ground in an accident are pretty high, yet a lot of people neglect this part of their body when buying gear. A knee injury will sideline you for a long time while it heals and surgery and physical therapy are a lot more expensive than a set of knee guards for $50-90. Don't forget to protect those knees!

On the street:

Helmet: Arai Profile
Jacket: FirstGear Kilimanjaro
Pants: Tourmaster Cortech
Gloves: Helimot H20's
Boots: Alpinestars SMX2's

On track:

Helmet: Arai Profile
Suit: 1-piece Helimot leather race suit, Helimot back protector
Gloves: Helimot H20's
Boots: Sidi Vertigo Corsas

I've tried wearing the one-piece on the street, but it's just not made for all-day rides. It's quite snug, which is great on track, but a bit limiting when you're just out for a ride. Also the temperature range for the suit isn't nearly as wide as textile gear that can be zipped up and run with a standard liner, an electric liner, or have mesh opened to flow air right through.

Because I love the skin I am in I always ride with the following:

Helemet: Zox Hi Serria Flip face
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r290/BlueLilTyke/08-07-31%20New%20Lid/DSC00956.jpg

Two bandana's, one on my hair and one about my mouth and chin (hair to keep it in place and mouth and chin because my nose tends to run when it gets cold and...well I am sure you can figure out its purpose with that.)

Joe Rocket Trixie Jacket & Pants:
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r290/BlueLilTyke/08-08-09%20Backyard/DSC01126.jpg

Thick socks (unknown brand, sorry :D )

Men's Icon boots the non-track ones. (see picture above, look to my feet)

For gloves I used to have a pair of Alpine star gauntlet SP gloves but the weather was to hot and I could not get the gear off fast enough to cool down... so my bf's dad gave me a pair of Harley half gloves with padded palms... They work and they were free. I'll get another full set of gloves sooner or later. (pictured above... Peace! )

In my closet but not worn as much as my leathers is a Joe rocket mesh jacket and Frank Thomas 'over pants' (big enough to wear work clothes under without wrinkling them) also my Scorpion EXO helmet. And a back protector that the bf says is mine but keeps wearing...

Sort of thread hijack... Kim how do the Joe rocket gloves fit? Speaking of gloves... do they tend to run small? Joe Rocket is a big retail out here but not so much the other brands but I can't seem to find a pair that fit...

The Joe Rocket gloves seem to be made really well, but the fingers are really short and I found my hands going numb much faster in them than the other pairs I have. I got a Medium in them, and they are really snug, where the medium in the AlpineStars seems a bit on the big side... the big difference is that the AlpineStars have room for my long fingers... My hands aren't terribly big, but my fingers are long - makes gloves tricky for me! :)

Yeah I have issues with gloves too. I have what I call guy hands and feet. Throw in long piano like (though never played) fingers and that isn't a good mix. The Stella's are an awesome make. Thats what I had but I got the meduims thinking they would 'stretch' a little and they never did... Guess I'll just go with those again but this time get large :D

Thank you for your input! It is so hard to shop for things you cannot test ride tehe! I agree... being out in the middle of nowhere, I do most of my online clothes shopping from newenough.com because of their awesome return policy. You should check them out if you want a perfect fit. When I ordered my gloves, I ordered 2 pair in half sizes apart. When they arrived, I selected the ones that fit and returned the other pair. You end up paying only for shipping the item to and from. They have excellent customer service, too.

You might pay a bit more in the end, but you end up with perfect fitting clothes.... no guess work involved.

Keep in mind that I am of very modest means and that I spent years saving to buy the following gear:

Helmet- Suomy Spec 1R
Earplugs- Foam plugs
Jacket - Ducati Dainese Isle of Mann
Gloves- Custom Helimot H20
Boots- Frey-Daytona Security III
Pants- Ducati Dainese Speed Pants
Backprotector- Helimot TLV
Armor- (replaced or added to Dainese factory) Torso, shoulder, elbows, lower extremities Level IV T-Pro Armor

I wear all of the above all of the time. My view is that it's cheaper to buy all of the above gear than one trip to the hospital. And, mobility is extremely important to me.

My gear closet consists right now of a 2pc and 1pc suit.

My helmet is a Shoei RF-1000. Boots are Alpinestars SMX-4. Gloves are Alpinestars SP-2. I also have an Alpinestars back protector I wear 90% of the time.

I'm always wearing one or the other. Depends on how I feel that day and the weather. The 1pc has more substantial padding but the 2pc keeps me warmer in cool weather. And the 1pc is great for days that are a little hotter because it vents so well... If it's too hot, I'll just stay home and take a nap. :)

For the 2pc, I have Dainese Arizona Jacket and Alpinestars Bat Pants.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/Turbo-Joe/CP2_9278.jpg

My 1pc is a Teknic Chicane.

Kurosaki

you use the 2 piece to ride to work? if so, what do you do once you get there?

Yeah, on days I decide to ride to work, I'll wear the 2pc with my work clothes in a backpack. One of these days I'll show up in the 1pc but I don't wanna deal with the questions comments that would come from it that early in the morning.

When I get there, I change in the bathroom. Or if I'm early enough, I'll close the door where I sit and just change there. I share an office with 2 other people so I try to get there in time so I don't have to go to the bathroom.

Then I just hang my jacket over my chair, put my pants in the bag, gloves in my helmet, helmet in a drawer, and boots under my desk. Works out pretty good.

I was thinking about getting an aerostitch suit that just zips right off so I can wear my work clothes underneath and cut out the backpack part but I don't ride enough days to work to justify the cost. It's pretty much if I wake up and have the impulse to ride to work, I'll do it. Never really plan on it.

yeah, that's the beauty of riding a bike. Use it when the mood and weather is right.

Other than the clothes under the suit thing, the reason I like the Aerostich is that I deal with temps from the 30s to the 90s. The suit allows me to bundle up tight or vent to my hearts content and still remain reasonably protected.

BTW, speaking of the Aerostich, do you know if this would be allowed for track days?

Alex

Most orgs allow the Stich in at least the C group, some allow it in all groups. Depends on the provider.

November 24th, 2008, 02:46 PM
The rules for a couple of the local organizations say that aerostitch suits are OK but it's only for novice group I believe. I guess with A group and B group, crashes are to be expected to be a little nastier.

As some of you know, I'm a big mutha. At 6'3" and 250lbs with a very oddball-lookin shaven albino gorilla-shaped body, and nothing fits me, ever! I may find things that are close.. but it'll have issues, or I look like a complete dork.

Helmet: I have a large almost perfectly round head. Usually the biggest that any company offers will fit snugly. When I was just a little boy if my father wanted to buy the kids hats, he would try one on, if it fit him it would fit me.

Gloves: I've got super wide palms. My hands are 4½" across the knuckles, and my fingers are kinda short by proportion. If I am lucky enough to find something that I can actually get on, the fingers of the gloves tend to be too long, UGH! I found a set of kevlar reinforced work gloves that resemble bike gloves at some oddball tool shop that work well for me.

Jackets: I still haven't found one that fits me right yet. While I can always find something that fits over my large shoulders, I usually something silly like the arms are too short or the jacket goes a little past halfway down my abdomen. Its like all bike gear that I can actually put on is designed for a short fat biker. The other problem I have is a massive adam's apple. Most jackets tend to dig into this. Not good! What I have now is a cruiser-style black jacket that I got as a teenager. It was MASSIVE back then, but its sized small. Small what? I think it was mislabeled, probably why it was the last one and on sale. Now it fits a little snug, the sleeves are long enough, but the jacket is a bit short on my abdomen. I pull my pants up a little higher so It doesn't look dorky. :D

Pants: This is one thing thats easy to find for me. My legs are quite short for someone of my stature. I like to wear my pants a little long and thats a relatively common size of 32x32.

Footwear: Forget it. Any riding boots that I've ever had interest in, nobody had in my size 15 to try on. I just wear heavy workboots. I almost never find anything in my size in regular shoe stores either.

To top it off, I'm a very physical person, I tend to wear things out quickly, so If i do find something I like, you can find me buying 2 or 3 of them. The inside of my closet is like Ernest P Worrel or Pee Wee Herman... everything is the same!

Yeah, and my pants will roll under my heels when I'm not wearing any shoes with 32" length. I'm probably more accurately a 29 or 30 length. The longer pants look good though with a boot-cut bottom and nice shoes.

The longer pant legs also don't look dorky when bending the knees while sitting on the bike... pants have a tendency to get SHORTER when doing so and before you know it, you look like Jethro Bodine riding your bike. :biggrin1:

At work recently I slipped on ice and had a beer keg land on the inside of my leg; from foot to knee. Thick ass rubber sole prevented any broken bones in my feet, which I would imagine I had a good 90% of having. Just ended up with lots of bruising.

And another time while riding, I lowsided and once again the thick rubber sole prevented my foot from getting hurt, this time under the bike. It even kept my bike's fairings and exaust off the ground preventing any damage to the bike. Got up and rode off with a rashed bar end and clutch lever.

So how do you like the apex air pants. I was looking at them for a summer pant.

I haven't had a chance to test em out in actual warm weather yet though.
But I have to say they are great. They are really comfy I find and seem high quality.
They also look bad ass. :p

Knee armor has a bad habit of moving around but I'm thinking that may be because of the size on me (I can never find good fitting pants).
Knee pads moving around or not though, I'd personally recommend getting separate knee pads that strap around the knee itself anyways.

Here's my gear!
Brand new last year (2008) is My 2pc Teknic Vixen Suit, I can't seem to find it on the Teknicgear web site, but here's a link to a store:

http://www.revzilla.com/product/teknic-womens-vixen-two-piece-race-suit

http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo29/Scorpielle/DSC_4172.jpg

LOVE this suit, It actually fits me, I've had a huge problem finding leathers the right size, but these are excellent, I'm just 5'3" so sizing is always an issue, Ladies if you can find it, grab it, this one is a size 8.

I also have a Joe Rocket Mesh jacket for the summer, I can't remember the name of it, I got it a few years ago.

And I have an OLDER Joe rocket retro jacket from when I was a passenger only, LOL, Then when I moved up I wanted my own snazzy suit, no more mismatched jacket and pants for me! LOL

http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo29/Scorpielle/Elleinleatherjacket.jpg

Boots: I have Black Sidi Vertebrae, they are about 8 yrs old, mens, but like size 39 to fit my foot LOL

Gloves: I got a new pair of Alpinestar last year, Stella SP-3.

Helmet: Arai Signet/e Gyphon, It's a few years old as well, But I love it and I have no Issues with it, Maybe next year I'll get a new one. :p
http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo29/Scorpielle/myhelmet.jpg

And I can not stand the thought of riding without the gear, even when I had a Scooter , I still wore my leather jacket boots ,gloves and Helmet LOL:D

for the track:
I'm too tall and skinny to fit any off the rack stuff, so i had to get a custom fitted suit. komodo is local to me and a big supporter of the race scene so i went with them. great suit and they have a big following. i definitely recommend komodo gear to anyone:

helmet: i'm pretty happy with my flat black HJC AC12

boots: alpinestars smx plus perfed, gloves: joe rocket gpx 2.0
love the boots. the gloves are ok. need to upgrade. they're a little too short for my long fingers and probably not really up to serious racing standards. they've held up well to a handfull of lowsides though.

put that all together and i look something like this:

i've crashed a good 20+ times over the past 5 years... haha (most in my first year of racing)

most at a fairly low speed on 100cc bikes though. only 2 that i can think of that were above 50mph, but that one gave me a slight concussion. only injuries i've had is a broken collar bone, a half dozen cracked ribs and a cracked tailbone. not a bad average really. main reason for all the cracked ribs is that i have 11 vertebrae fused (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jbroom/2401281022/) (scoliosis). my body doesn't bend and flex when i hit the ground like its suppose to.

I think the key problem is that our bodies aren't supposed to hit the ground. What they do or don't do when they hit the ground is an entirely separate discussion. :D

haha... well, thats debatable i guess. you could argue that flexability is part of evolution.... keeping us from getting hurt in the hunting and fighting world of ancient man?

i was going to do some Muay Thai stuff just to check it out and for exercise, but decided agianst it. i'm not too afraid of getting beat up a little, but a normal person getting kicked in the ribs can absorb that hit pretty well by the spine and ribs flexing. my spine doesn't flex so my ribs take all that hit along with the couple of functioning vertebrea that do actually work. i didn't think the risk was worth it... instead i ride dirtbikes. way safer... haha

Yeah, I think my magic suit makes me invulnerable or something. I once crashed up at Deals Gap (Tail of the Dragon) when it was raining, doing maybe 80MPH around a turn I low-sided... I was sliding and watching my bike spinning down the road, as a SUV comes around the turn strait for me!!! I throw all my body weight to my right in an attempt to miss the back tire and next thing I knew I was tumbling in the dirt on the side of the road, guess I missed him ;) He stopped and got out of his car, white as a ghost.. I think he was surprised that I had a smile on my face.

I could prolly consider myself a professional crasher, I am 100% clear headed now when I crash, hence why I was able to un-crash myself the other day. Who says crashing doesnt pay off?

price and budget have dictated my selections of riding gear:

Helmet: HJC AC11 "Zeek" (oldie but goodie)
Jackets: Both Xelement, one is a leather and cordura armored (shoulders and elbows) mix, abit on the lighter side, and a cordura armored (shoulders, elbows and back). this one's heavier than the other.
Boots: Both are again Xelement. One is a laced front, above the ankle type boot, the other is a more classic cruiser type riding boot.

i suffered a non-riding injury and was unable to ride for several months, and loaned that first jacket to a cousin who took a spill wearing it riding with her boyfriend. they're both alright....that jacket saved her elbow and shoulder from some months of skin re-generation!

I know Kelly has given several ataboys to newenough but after today I will be hard pressed to use anyone else unless I have to have "it" in a certain time frame and they wont be able to respond.

I've been wanting a TourMaster Transition 2 jacket in Hi-Vis Yellow (http://www.newenough.com/image/path/14763/hivizyellow.jpg) since November and everyone has had them backordered. January 30 I got an eMail from newenough that they had a shipment arriving so I placed my order. Got the notice that it would be shipping on 2/5 and when I use USPS from TX I usually get it the third day. Sure enough Saturday there is a box for me and with great excitement I open it up.

Well I didn't even get the flaps all the way opened and I knew it was a Yellow not the Hi-Vis Yellow. Got on line, ordered the correct one and requested an RMA. Megan eMails this morning and say's all their paper work matches up and they shipped what I ordered and gives me the standard RMA policy (I pay). Sent her a copy of the eMail to me that said the Hi-Vis was in stock and suggested it was a phone order and why would I order a Yellow when I was waiting for a Hi-Vis.

Bottom line, Hi-Vis in transit to me, pre-paid RMA sent to me, and 110% credit when they get the yellow one back.

Megan and company at newenough are everything Kelly has said they are.

OG-

It gets better. When you do a return, you can select either to have your credit card reimbursed 100% of your purchase price or take a 110% store credit. In addition, I believe they give you something like 10% off on your next purchase if you do an online review of the products you buy.... or something like that. Poke around their website and you'll be surprised what a great company this really is.

Glad you got your stuff... still waiting for them to get my helmet in. :)

For us in Hawaii, I've found their shipping rates to be excellent, especially on larger items. Not many companies know the meaning of customer service these days. It's refreshing to find one that does and goes above and beyond.

I agree, it is pricey, but for street riding, by the time you figure the price for a good jacket and pants, plus the hassle of getting the right fit, it can be almost the same price. Not dealing with leather is a plus, too.

The Aerostich suit can be custom tailored for you if you find one off the rack doesn't fit you right. Their customer service and work quality is top notch... I guess you pay for that upfront. That is a well designed, well thought out MC specific piece of gear was my main attraction to it and it delivers.

For dedicated track work, I completely agree... stick with a leather suit. The AS suit can be used at some events, but not all.

Things I like about the J/R pants:
they are the same as my jacket, the side zipper is also on the liner so they are easier to get on and off with the liner installed.

Things I like about the Scorpion: the padding/armor in the hip is thicker than the JR,

The padding in the JR, I don't know much about padding/armor in these, but to me it sounds like "armor" is better than "padding" and the JR had "padding" in the hip area and the scorpion has "armor". How big a difference is there? I haven't looked at them recently but I think the scorpion has movable knee/shin "armor" where the JR has knee "armor" that isn't movable based on your size/shape. If I am mistaken on these, let me know.

I basically looking for something that I can pull on over my clothes.

The JR has two pockets in each leg for the knee armor. That way you can adjust it depending on how your knee fits in when you're on the bike.

Whenever I wear them it's over my regular clothes with no problem.

I kinda figured that was the outcome. I am mainly looking at something that I can wear over my clothes to keep from getting soaked in the rain, but also have some type of protection in the areas that will get hit the hardest in a fall.
Right now, leathers are out the question due to cost and my family are all vegetarians, if I suggest getting leathers..........

Me on the other hand, I still like gnawing on some seared dead animal on occasion.

i got that bag too. love it! although i am not so sure about their quality control. i ordered my bag from motorcycle superstore. first one, a button was broken, so i sent it back. second one came. i thought it was good, so i ripped off all the tags and stuff. come to find out later that it was missing one of the zipper pulls for the helmet compartment. luckily the other zipper works, so i am still ok.

if anyone gets this bag, i would suggest to buy it locally and test EVERYTHING out.

Got my new AlpineStars Barcelona jacket yesterday from Motorcycle Superstore. I can't believe I only paid $141 for this $300-$400 jacket at closeout. Increadible deal on a really nice jacket. It has all the CE-approved armor (the back is just a foam pad, but it will hold a decent aftermarket pad too) and a removable Thinsulate liner. Quality A*s stitching throughout and the leather is thick enough to protect, but soft enough to be comfortable right out of the box. I have a feeling this is going to be my "go to" jacket at least until things warm up around here and I switch to my TourMaster Intake mesh.

How come the chicks get all the cool pants, and we either look like a Rossi wannabe, a goldwing geezer, or like we're going to clean the barn? I want me some groovy pants. :D Anyway, here's my stuff:

Arai Profile 'Sinister' Helmet, very comfortable, and I have a huge melon, so it was surprising to find one that fit so well.
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/SIN.jpg

Joe Rocket Phoenix Jacket. Good fit, great for hot weather, not so much for cooler temps. Liner is ok for rain, but feels alot like a hefty bag.

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/2008_Joe_Rocket_Phoenix_5.0_Jacket.jpg

Shift Racing 'Torque' pants. Kevlar reinforced knees and butt. Fit is long, but the quality is really nice. These are very thick, and get hot in the summer, but I imagine better than leathers.

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/2009_Shift_Racing_Torque_Jeans.jpg

Icon Chukka Boots. See review on this site. Can't say enough good about them. Not cold weather boots however.

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/2009_Icon_Field_Armor_Chukka_Boots.jpg

Power Trip Grand National Gloves. They look good, feel good, but I just can't get over the nagging feeling that these aren't going to take a spill real well.

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/2009_Power_Trip_Grand_National_Gloves_Black.jpg

And for nastier weather, I have the Joe Rocket Alter Egos. Good for function, but look goofy IMO.

You might want to try a mix of a 50/50 mix of h2o2 and water in a spray bottle on any spots. I have also washed things in the dishwasher. Doesn't tear things up. Good luck and don't forget to post your results.

Have you considered picking up a pair of Bohn under armor or even some of the off road brands like Fox have some underwear type armor for the hips which aren't that expensive.

The Bohn armor's exactly what I'm looking at, maybe coupled with Draggin' Liners under my jeans. I have a feeling the Victorys are a little too baggy will move a little in a crash and the kevlar in them would be less than useful.

My big problem with the Bohn stuff is trying to find it in a local store. My thighs are apparently larger than normal for my waist size, so I have a ton of trouble finding pants that fit well - so I definitely want to try that stuff on until I find a brand I know fits me properly. I absolutely despise having to return items I bought online, so I avoid it whenever possible (which is why I haven't ordered on newenough yet, though I'll probably break down and do it now that we're actually hitting some riding weather).

I'm actually toying with the idea of hacking up my A* foam back protector (once I replace it) and sewing the pieces into my Victorys a la football pads. It'd look weird to have a padded tailbone and hips, but then I'm better protected and I bet it'd make long rides more comfortable!

They are slowly falling apart and have become uncomfortable too.
Don't want to deal with them anymore so time to replace them.

Could anyone recommend me some quality (actual quality..not just a name) leather gloves?
I'd prefer something that's not too pricey but it doesn't have to be the most affordable of the bunch either.
And it absolutely has to be a full length 'gauntlet' style glove.
Figured I'd post here instead of starting a whole other topic.
Would appreciate any recommendations you may have. :)

i'd be more worried about protecting myself from skin graphs on my hips and thighs than padding.

That padding helps cut down on the skin grafts. It lets the material flex and move without wrinkling. Not sure about that? Take some of your favorite material, back it with a stick, (or as was demonstrated to me) or beef bone, then push it into your favorite grinding stone at a medium pressure. See how fast it wears through? Now do the same, but add a piece of armor between the stick/bone and do the same at the same pressure. It's the difference between "Needs Repair" and "Throw it Away"

I also rock Howard Leight Max ear plugs and usually have thin thermal layers under everything. The pants are the newest addition to my wardrobe--I wanted something I could wear over jeans with better protection than mesh but more comfort in hot weather than most textile pants I found which are often waterproof (gross when you're sweating). The Havoc pants fit the bill, hope they don't mind short stints of riding in rain. I know I don't :)

dyeclan - please check the materials tag on your Shift Torque jeans... there's been reports that the lined material in Shift jeans is actually a mixture that only contains 5% kevlar. Other forum users have said the jeans blow on impact and provides almost no resistance. Just tryin' to look out for ya so you don't develop a false sense of security - something to check.

SpyderGirl - so is that Alpinestars armor-thing a substitute for a riding jacket? The mesh material won't fall apart in a crash (thereby rendering the armor useless since it won't stay in place)? if so, that looks awesome and i may pick one up as well

I always believe in riding in FULL GEAR, especially when riding the backroads, no matter how long you've been riding, rich or poor :2cents: (no pun intended)

Helmet- http://www.cyclegear.com/images/StreetHelmets/707_helmets_vendetta_stryke_blk_MD.jpg Seven 0 Seven Vendetta helmet (Cycle Gear shop brand)
Jacket- http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/2009_Scorpion_Womens_Nip_Tuck_Jacket_Black_Off_White.jpg Scorpion Nip/Tuck Jacket (love it- fits fantastically)
Gloves- http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/2009_Icon_Womens_Pursuit_Perforated_Gloves.jpg Icon Pursuit - really like these, not a lot of padding but very sleek and don't get in the way of my jacket sleeves zipping up
Boots- http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/632917687534440466g10129.jpg not 100% happy with the boots style-wise, but I had to buy something fast for the MSF course. They're really comfortable though, didn't even need a break in.

I'm still tracking down the Scorpion Savannah pants I want, nobody seems to have them in a size to fit my ass :D If I haven't found them in a couple of weeks I may try the Haley pants, but I'm worried the XL won't fit me- I have powerlifter thighs.

my wife has those pants. she said that gym shorts would be fine, but she doesn't think you would be able to wear work pants underneath... unless you bought a size larger than you normally would.

it is a rather form-hugging riding pants.

I see a lot of scorpion and JR, I have a JR jacket and a scorpion helmet, both I like, 'cept the helmet has a lot of wind noise, (but I wear earplugs) Still looking at getting either JR pants or scorpion pants. So, I couldn't get the Scorpion Savannah pants I wanted, they were out of stock until September. I took it as a sign to get leathers and got the Alpinestars Stella Cat pants:
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/2006_Alpinestars_Womens_Stella_Cat_Leather_Pants_Black.jpg

My review for them:

-They run very narrow in the hips/thighs. I had to get a size 14 (50 in A* sizing) to accomodate my *cough* posterior, which made them too big in the waist. I can deal with that, just keep it in mind; these will likely fit a slimmer build perfectly.

-They are *very* high rise. They definitely fit at or above your real waist; I'm short-waisted so that's right at the bottom of my rib cage for me. Because of this, when you're on the bike and bending forward, they cut into you a bit.

-Design wise: they have a snap fastener for the waist which is terrible for leather, it pops open every time the leather flexes. They also use zippers for the knee armor pockets which can be pretty uncomfortable rubbing against your legs. They are lined with taffeta, which feels nice, but a) doesn't stretch and b) is a pretty warm fabric.

They are not ventilated at all, solid construction, no pockets. The leather is a very good quality though, the feel and quality of the pants is excellent. I've been wearing them in 90 degree weather in the sun and really haven't felt overheated in them. I plan on replacing the waist snap with a velcro closure which should solve the flexing/popping issue.

Overall, definitely A* quality with a few sizing/function issues due to my particular body type. I'd definitely recommend them, just keep in mind how European sizing tends to run (narrow in the hips/chest/waist) and be prepared to alter the clothin accordingly.

Sounds vey familiar, I too had a knee injury due to a bike accident, broke the left kneecap in half, while WEARING the joe rocket textile pants, I believe when i hit the ground the knee pads shifted out of place, so this time I bought leather, but anyways I've got:

Earplugs: AO Safety 312-1250 EAR Earsoft Regular Uncorded Earplugs. I plan on getting custom fit earplugs this year.
Misc: Respro Foggy Mask to prevent fogging of both shield and glasses.

I find it interesting that every time I asked a someone about stopping fogging, they ONLY told me about things to stop the face shield from fogging... What about my glasses? Icon Hella Crossbones ladies jacket in Crusader White

Initial impression: SOOOOOOOO in love with this jacket. Good leather quality, awesome little detailing- zipper pull is a skullie, stitching is nice and tight, there is some perforated leather under the arms. Corset straps on the side for sizing, and it says "Hell Bent, Heaven Sent" on the zipper flap :P Back, side and shoulder vents.

Sizing: runs large. I got a L and returned it for a M; I'm usually a L so I was surprised. Better than the alternative I guess? Very long in the sleeves.

Fit: Awesome. Only felt a little stiff out of the box; lots of room in the chest and the side buckles snug it up nicely. Liner is quilted.

Obviously I can't wear test it but from lounging around on the couch with it, it's fantastic.

http://i2.iofferphoto.com/img/item/101/381/207/eb78_1.JPG

Set-Up Racing Boots: My hiking boots were too little, but $500 Sidi's were too much. These boots are perfectly in the middle-- armor in the toe and shins, calf protection-- but it doesn't break the bank.
http://www.setupaustralia.com/images/boots/VisionBlack_600.jpg

And the most ghetto 2pc leather suit ever... made by a manufacturer in Pakistan that I can't even find on the internet. But it's an extra small, and after cutting off 4 inches of the pant leg, it fits! lol It's also blue and white, and my bike and helmet are red (first bike was black). You can only imagine the comments that I get for being the ultimate fashion faux-pas on two wheels.

I need to stop being a broke college student so I can afford a flattering 1-pc!

KBC Helmet - not a damn clue the model, all it says is MotoDesign along top. It's a dual flip, and it's probably the best part of my gear.

Now this is where it gets bad...

Jacket - Joe Rocket Honda Branded.
Pants - Joe Rocket... Honda Branded.
Gloves - Joe Rocket... yep Honda Branded.
Boots - Joe Rocket (guess the branding?)

So I ride around on the Ninja (bright green Ninja...) in full Honda gear, which makes me really easy to identify, but it certainly doesn't win any points for style.

The gear came as part of the "Go" package when I bought my CBR125R last year, and replacing it has proven to be too expensive at this point. I may sell the gear to a Honda rider one day, if the opportunity comes up. The Joe Rocket gear has been decent so far, the boots rock, the pants are a bit uncomfortable but the jacket feels good enough to wear all the time. The low point of the setup is the gloves, they're terrible and the velcro pops off while I'm riding.

Here's a pic of the gear, and my old bike:

Argh. I can be such a schmuck sometimes. :rotflmao:

So this is the second textile jacket I've ruined, or at least partially ruined, through a non-motorcycling event. Quite a few years ago, on a long road trip, I draped my jacket over the bike, and after I came back I realized I had burned a huge hole through one of the sleeves as it was resting on the exhaust pipe. Dumbass. :)

So I got a new jacket, which has actually held up well for 6 or 7 years at this point. Until I go to wash it from the intense bug swarm it slammed into this past weekend. Washed fine, put it in the dryer for 20 minutes delicate, which has worked fine in the past, even though it says not to use it in the dryer.

And it ripped a huge hole in the shoulder, completely destroying the fabric. Unfixable, and not worth fixing at this point, looking at how worn the fabric had become over the years anyway. So I ordered a new jacket. Thx for all the recommendations for newenough.com. I priced out what I wanted by calling around locally, and turns out that their pricing is the cheapest I found. I found others equivalent, but none cheaper, and they've got such a good rep I figured I'd give them a shot. So in a few days, I should have this hanging in my closet:

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=10&pictureid=1748 http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=10&pictureid=1749

link on newenough.com (http://www.newenough.com/protective_apparel/textile_jackets_and_pants/first_gear/firstgear_kilimanjaro_5_textile_motorcycle_jacket.html)

Have had great luck with the brand, and in fact earlier versions of the same jacket. Comfy in all conditions, can fit an electric liner underneath as needed, CE armor, holds up well for years and years, and it's reasonably inexpensive. With luck I'll have it in hand in time for this Saturday's ninjette ride, but if not you'll see me in that ancient jacket with a hole burned through its sleeve.

kkim

lol... I have the previous gen kilimanjaro. It's a great jacket and really has a lot of pockets. :D Like they said, though, it does run a bit big for the sizing. I wished I had bought one size smaller than I did, though this is my dual sport jacket and I might want to wear some armor under it someday, so the over sizing could come in handy.

Very high quality jacket.... good choice.

It looks whiter in these photos than it does in person, but it still might start looking dirty earlier than my darker jackets. Here's a link (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/39/16579/ITEM/Firstgear-Kilimanjaro-Jacket.aspx) to an online retailer that shows all 6 of the color options on one page.

well if it get dirty, just throw it in the washer... oh wait, that's how you got in this predicament in the first place. :D

I would get the color you did or the Hi Vis yellow for safety's sake.... you know me and visibility.

HJC CL-MAX helmet, Alpinestars One-0-One jacket, Alpinestars Bat pants, Tourmaster Solution Road boots, and various gloves according to the weather.

I also have a 20 year old Hein Gericke California II that's still in excellent shape, although it's really not a jacket that provides any protection (glove leather and no armor).

Jacket: Cortech GX sport 2 Textile (silver)
Pants: not sure whether I should go with full pants or knee guards, for the time being I wear Levis.
Gloves: Cortech DX
Boots: Dr. Martens, until I fond some proper riding boots.

Those with Fulmer helmets: How do they fit? I love their design/shape but no local shops sell them.

Ordered Scorpion Deuce pants Monday from NewEnough, the arrived today. 2 days. Looked at the FedEx tracking site, they were shipped from Anaheim, about 15 min down the road. If I had known that I would have went down and picked them up.

Now a BOOT question. Are they comfortable enough to walk around in some, not a hiking trip. Maybe a stroll around the mall or around at Newsomes during breakfast. I am looking at the A* MX-4, found them for 149 on clearance.

Your comments appreciated.

I have the A* SM something or anothers, you can see them in my earlier post in this thread - and I wear them for several hours on my feet... They tend to get warm, but they're good! Remember, I need double knee replacements and wear tennis shoes most all of the time to keep the knees happy - and they're fine with the boots. Just make sure your socks are high enough to come past the tops of them, as they can be a bit irritating ot the skin if they're not...

Newenough was true to their rep, and the jacket arrived this morning, exactly as ordered and earlier than I would have expected... One thing that I'm curious about is that these jackets no longer have a velcro strap to tighten the neck portion, like the gen 1 and gen 2 versions did. But it does have a bunch of other new adjustments, that were useful in getting it to fit just right. First ride test will be on the ninjette ride this Saturday...

So how do you like the apex air pants. I was looking at them for a summer pant.
Just an update I got the Apex Air perf pants from Tourmaster. They fit nicely but they are still hot the perf helps a lot but it's still warm. I like them just wish they were flat black to match the jacket. They are just a tiny bit glossy.

So far I like them, they are easy to take on and off with the zipper in the sides. They are a bit on the warm side wearing pants underneath, the mesh in the thigh area has a layer underneath and the air flow is less than u think. Also, if you are on the edge of the size chart and will be wearing them over regular pants, go 1 size up like newenough recommends. Mine are snug, borderline tight with pants on. With shorts on going to the beach they are fine. Would I buy them again, I 'll say yes.

Don't know anything about the A*'s so I really can't comment on them.

Terri-Lyn,
That's Joe Rocket, yes? I have the JR ballistic pants which are full textile and have a waterproof liner that is removable, but they don't have hip armor. I also have the JR Cleo pants which are mesh - you can see both in my post earlier in this thread... given your location I would say to go with the ballistics as they are definitely warmer, but not too warm, even on our 90* and high humidity days :)

I have the JR womens Alto Ego pants. I love them. I wear them over my work pants. http://www.newenough.com/protective_apparel/convertible_textile_mesh_jackets_and_pants/joe_rocket/ladies_alter_ego_textile_mesh_motorcycle_overpants.html
seems to have all the other JR pants rolled into one. Plus I love the design, but it is on the zip off part for the mesh to be exposed. My temps are in the triple digets now, I do sweat a little but not to bad, considering. When I wear shorts under, I don't sweat at all.

What are the sizes like? Do you recommend just the one size bigger or bigger then that? Buying stuff off the internet is a big pain. For jeans I can range anywhere from 5-10 :S

I bought a pair of Dainese Torque IN boots (pictured here):

These boots are almost as comfortable as my A* Octane riding shoes but with WAYY more protection. I can't roll my heel in these things no matter how hard I try. They were only about $291 canadian too!

Oh and for anyone within the greater Toronto area....Rider's choice is having a sale...so ya...now's the time to go and splurge haha.

I think just the one size larger unless you plan on doing alot of layering for warmth. I normally wear a 14 and I choose the XL, fits nice. Hope that helps.

Sticky thread in the pics section (http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5611) with instructions on getting pics up here; there are a few different ways.

Test pic from tinypic.com:

TinyPic.com works fine here, you probably weren't using the right code from them. You need to use the IMG code (the second choice), not the HTML embed code.

Another post for the girls. :)

Helmet: Arai Astral-X. I'm not sure what to think of it since it's my first helmet ever. It fogged up a lot when I was stopped yesterday, even though all my vents were open. I hate having to lift my face shield at stops due to no longer being able to see. It was cooler when I rode (around 13C/55F), but this is Canada. It will get MUCH colder. I'm kind of worried. It was really great when I was riding in 26C/79F weather though.

http://www.blackfootdirect.com/images/street_gear/arai_astralx_silver_frost.jpg

Jacket: Shift Siren leather. I don't know if I like the fit, but it is sharp-looking and protective. It's cut very rectangular, so it is huge around my waist, but fits perfectly everywhere else. *shrug* Shoulder armor sits at the right place and feels secure, so that's good. Girls who are not shaped like a rectangle might want to stay away from this one.

http://www.shiftmx.ca/images/products/ST07_70085_008_F_pv.jpg

Pants: Joe Rocket Alter Ego textile/mesh. LOVE these. They were already raved about in a previous post here, but they're so so perfect. I'm a shorty, so the adjustable hem and adjustable armor height are a godsend!! They also have a removable strip that wraps from one leg to the other, across the butt, which exposes mesh to keep the air flowing on hot days. :) Waterproof/windproof liner in the leg is also removable!

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/2008_Joe_Rocket_Womens_Alter_Ego_Pants_Black.jpg

Gloves: Icon Merc Short. These are great! Perfect fit for someone with small hands. No floppy finger ends!

http://www.rideicon.com/showImage.jsp?class_id=8720&image_type=fullsize&rank=110

Boots: Frye Campus. Mine are dark blue. This is where I need some help... I need the extra height that these give me (2" in the heel, maybe a bit over 0.5" in the rest of the sole). However, I realize that these might not be the best option for riding because they're not padded at all. The leather is thick, but they fit loosely around the ankle. Suggestions needed!!! Icon Bombshell boots are TOO high. Most important aspect is that 0.5" lift in the sole overall. Otherwise, I will definitely need to get my bike lowered.
