So, vote for your age bracket... No cheating!!

Nah, I'm not really invincible. But yes, I do know everything. Therefore, anything I think and say is, by definition, fact.

Ah - another seasoned mind I can relate to. Remember, we're only as young as we think.

Kelly I think I'll claim the oldest "newbie" title. Seems like I've had the Ninja a lot longer than 3 months but that's all it has been. Time does fly when you are having fun with your friends.

Old Man, I got my Ninja in June. As you know, I have been riding for a long time. Well, when I got this bike, the dealer had misplaced the Owner`s Manual, so the only thing I got was a so-so orientation to the bike. I felt like a total baloonfoot the first few days. This was my first bike without a kickstarter. The shift lever was on the Left and was one down and five up. On my last bike it was on the Right side and was one up and three down. With the brake on the Left. I also never had a bike with directional lights. That took some getting used to. Of course the most embarassing thing was that I did not know about the kickstand safety switch. Invariably I would put the bike in gear with the stand down, and it would stop running. I would then crank the starter and flood the engine. Another Kawa owner on a 600cc told me about that infernal device--and then there was the time my bulky gloves turned off the kill switch while leaving a traffic light. That was real slick. Believe it or not, I am now very comfortable with the bike. I still don`t like the rear tyre (Dunlop) It is too squirrly. The mirrors were not adequate--so I changed them. On the overall, it is a great bike. I don`t think there is a 250 around that can come close. Right now I am learning the maintenance aspects of this bike, and have found this forum absolutely fantastic. I got the Owner`s Manual a week later and found after reading it that I learned very little.

Well this is my first bike and I know exactly what you mean. One thing I did that I have never regretted was taking the MSF course before I even bought the bike. I wanted to make sure this was something I really wanted to do and my road bike skills would transfer. So far my only ah **** has been to run out of gas two blocks sooner than I planed. Got on the reserve and into the station but it was embarrassing to say the least.

Have a great Thanksgiving and ride safe.

Old Guy, I had thought of taking the MSF course as a refresher. One of the guys we ride with is an MSF instructor. When he recently saw me take a corner with my knee about 6" off the pavement, he didn`t think that I needed the handling portion of the course. I do think that I will take it in the spring. They use Buell Blasts in the course. I tried one out before I decided on the Ninja and was totally unimpressed. The thing shakes like a thrashing machine. It should be OK for the course.

Good thing for Allstate auto insurance. The 01 F-150 front end took a beating....those were some very sturdy mailboxes (business size types on 4x4 posts), but I'm fine...gotta nice new rental Nissan Titan to drive while the Ford gets repaired. The guy that sent me off roading slowed down just long enough to look at me and my beat up truck and simply drove away....oh well.

I was a hostage negotiator on a Special Weapons Team with the Sheriff`s Dept for 11 years. That gave me a certain edge--I don`t, however exceed the speed limit--that`s why God made tracks and dragstrips. In the long run one saves on insurance. Believe it or not, I pay a penalty for riding a sportbike. If I would have bought a Honda Rebel, my insurance would have been $100.

Over time I've seen a couple of HDs and a Goldwing parked in handicapped spaces with placards and everything. Now that I think about it, there's a guy here at work that has a bum knee and a HD. He said he could use his placard for his bike, but he doesn't take it out that often.

On a bike I'd worry about the placard getting stolen. It's sort of like a free pass thing, I wouldn't want to be the one caught misusing it though! :ballchain:

A few weeks ago I went to the grocery store and there was a BMW dual sport with hard saddle bags parked in a handicap slot WITH handicap plates. I wondered if I would see someone in the store that looked like they belong to it.

During my tour of the store I say a gentleman in his mid-50's I'm guessing, plaid flannel shirt, blue jeans, nice beard, longer than usual gray hair, and a portable O2 tank on his shoulder (been there, done that:( ) and thought - maybe.

I lost track of him but when I came out of the store there he was at the bike loading up and strapping the O2 to the back. Gave him a thumbs up but really wanted to give him a hug for kicking life in the balls and not laying down.

Don, Neat story. I got my handicap placard when I had my hip replaced. They renewed it when I got cancer--all compliments of Southeast Asia War Games. I only use it in really upscale neighborhoods to flash on people. When I had my Cobra, I actually saw people standing near the car to see who would come out. Back in those days, I was in a wheelchair (a light graphite one) and that really freaked them out. I now have a slight limp but am a solid 190 Lbs. The Ninja does get their attention. I don`t need to use the handicap sticker much because I can park whereever I can squeeze in.`It`s funny, I can ride my bicycle for 100mi without a problem, but walking 200 yards or so can be quite painful. At the gym I bench press 200Lbs and can lift weights with the best of them--In fact there is a group of us Nam Vets who work out together and put most of the High School kids to shame. I do fine in everything but walking.

Read over this and noticed I voted but didn't write anything.
Anywho, 42, just retired for the first time and it will be a while before I get to retire again, hopefully that will be the last time and I can really play. One teenage daughter, ( you young guys, don't even think about it, I have a shotgun, a shovel and live beside an abandoned pineapple field.) And the midlife crisis is around the corner, so I figured, hey, why not a motorcycle. Young ladies will start coming around when said daughter is 18 and brings her friends home from college.

But I don't feel any older than I did when I enlisted 20 years ago, although when I tried to keep up with the 20 year olds while doing PT, they left me in the dust. I was the oldest in the shop by a long shot and one started calling my granpa and it stuck. But since you are only as old as you feel, I'm 42 going on 21.

nb

My last shop had 2 females that were always telling me that I was going to be a dirty old man. My reply, "yep, I will be a dirty old man till I am a dead old man"

Motorcycles are my midlife crisis toy. :) Boy oh boy, I wish I would have taken the plunge decades sooner.

40 gonna be 41 in may. been riding since I was 6 with first dirtbike. First streetbike 88' ninja 250 then SV 650 back to 09 ninja 250 for cheap(ya right with mods) commuting. Plan on keeping the ninja and picking up either a bigger sportbike or supermoto in the next few years.

I voted a while back, but didnt fess up to how old I am. I am 52. I have jokingly called my Ninja "mid life crisis mobile", although it is wishful thinking to call 52 yrs mid life.

I never owned a motorcycle till until I bought the ninja last year. My brother had a honda 550 when I was little, and rode off and on until he destroyed his ankle skiing. My mom worked as a PT (Physical Therapist) and gave me regular lectures about the evils of motorcycles.

I know now that I love riding. On one hand I wish I had gotten a MC a long time ago. On the other hand, I accept that for me MC riding is the "dessert" of life, best eaten after the "main course" of career, raising kids and so forth.

28 here, and loving every minute so far. More time on the bike would be better, but licence test is next week. Nice to see a good spread in the ages of us enthusiasts. Beats being surrounded by kids. (no offence intended to any young-ens here).. :)
