I'm not familiar with that kit, but as long as you position the flywheel more counterclockwise relative to the crankshaft than stock, the spark timing will be more advanced.

Gearbox Paul said he'd like to get red LEDs. That's a good choice because the human iris doesn't respond much to red, so even if he gets bright ones it shouldn't affect his night vision appreciably.

I've seen some mechanical flashers that do what you said, and others that will blink slowly or not at all with lighter than normal load. But I've never seen one that doesn't make at least a little...
