It all looks and feels OK. The wire was routed in a strange manner. It was pulled completely taut. I rerouted it. Maybe that will fix it.

Thanks guys. the wires from the switch disappear into the bowels of the bike. Any idea where the plug is if I want to bypass the sidestand switch to see if that's the problem? Is it on the right side...
