Look to see if they just wired in a toggle switch somewhere. This is a very common mod on my other bike. Never known the ninja to have cooling problems. If there isn't a switch it was wired that way...

Based on your description I would say the shock is done. If the ninja has a hydraulic shock that would explain the wet, greasy dirt. Cracked body or blown seal. If not a hydraulic shock I'm not sure...

Ran like **** when I got it. Opened up the carb and the PO had the needle c-clip set all the way down (about like shimming with 5 washers on a stock bike). Since that was corrected its been a blast....
