Use WD-40 to take off the majority of the grime, it makes quick work of it. Finish with a spray and wipe with simple green and move on with life. Many that are quick to write off white wheels have never owned a bike with them. The trick is to stay ahead of the dirt and crud, otherwise it takes much longer to get them back to shiny white.
I normally spend about 5 mins per wheel, 10... if I let them go for a while.

Any issues with getting WD-40 (or Simple Green) on your tires? Or are you spraying the wiping rag to apply?
