I'm glad you're not too badly banged up!
Do you really need new gear? Unless I missed something, that's just a little battle scarred. Just check the stitching and get it repaired if it's weakened. I learned this last part the hard way.
As far as remembering to let go, that's a common problem with beginners water skiers. When I'm teaching someone, before the first try, I tell them to let go as soon as it looks like they're going down. Bad stuff happens if you keep holding on!
