If you are new to riding, I would suggest taking a MSF Basic Rider Course (
http://www.msf-usa.org/brc.aspx).
Learning to do it properly from the start is a very good idea. You will learn things immediately that would take you years (and maybe some painful sliding) to figure out on your own.
Many insurance companies offer discounts for taking the course as well.
