As silly as it is, yes; that's exactly how it would work. People get angry at cyclists for blowing through stops for the same reason they get angry at us for lane splitting, whether it's legal or not; they can't do the same thing and see it as some sort of cheating. "I'm not allowed to do that, so why are they! They should have to wait like everyone else!" Cars speed and get away with it all the time; the same is not true for running a stop.
