Yeah, I destroyed a few also until I leaned my lesson - and that was to set it up in a way that reinforces all 4 corners. Most of the time that means setting up on grass and using tent stakes with rope at 45 deg angles on every corner, pulling the thing tight in every direction. Sometimes if I'm stuck on asphalt I'll anchor to my trailer on one side and a couple of monster toolboxes on the other side.
There really are no good pop-up canopies unless you pay $1K for a industrial grade business booth style of canopy.
