I'd try another (preferably correct) o-ring with a dab of silicone lube (not caulk) from the plumbing department.
I've replaced leaking coolant seals before, and never needed any additional sealant if everything else is correct.

It's your money and time. Permatex High Tack brother. Stay away from that silicone rubber crap unless your trying to seal the timing chain cover to oil pan on a big or small block Chevy. By the way the Permatex cleans-up with lacquer thinner. I've used it to seal the cylinder heads on a Kaw 500 triple (head gasket removed), the exhaust headers on most every motorcycle I've ever owned.
