2009 Ninja Leaking Right Fork

Hello!

I recently (few weeks ago) purchased a ninja 250 from a friend, my first bike. I've had a number of issues I've dealt with to this point but am now experiencing leaking forks. I've googled quite a bit and found that prior to replacing the seals I should try a seal mate to get the dirt out. The issue is, I don't see any guides on doing this procedure on a ninja 250 itself and I can't seem to get into the seal. There's a fork guide on this forum with this image:

The person seems to fit a knife under the seal without removing that outer black piece around it. My seal is so tight I can't fit anything into that spot to get it out.

I'd really like to avoid spending $400 to get this fixed and try going the seal mate route first. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting the seal off? Here's a photo of my fork, you can see the leak, too: https://imgur.com/a/39qFGzX

thank you
