Locking ball won't snap into socket, the release-lever must be activated to give ball room to move inwards. You can rig up way to pull release-lever while lowering extension down onto socket. Try wrapping loop of dental-floss between lever and body of extension so you can pull it remotely.
IS the plug completely spun out of hole? If not, have you tried tightening socket?
