Greetings & Salutations!!!

Let's see photo of your bike.

Don't replace perfectly-working parts with brand-new perfectly-working parts, that'll change nothing. Do compression-test first and if they indicate you've got worn-out rings, then replace just those, pistons probably fine. More likely low-compression would be due to valve-adjustment needs or fried valves from too-tight clearances. These bikes can go 200k-miles easily before needing rebuild.

1. do compression-test
2. measure valve-clearances, adjust if needed
3. change oil
4. check brake-pads
5. change brake-fluid if needed
6. tyres aired up with sufficient tread
7. oil chain
8. bring emergency supplies: tyre-plug kit, mini-compressor, extra oil, flashlight, MREs, etc.

That's really it! I've gone back & forth between Phoenix and SF Bay Area numerous times. Even between Phoenix & Portland too! With some camping in between.
