I cant comment on cleaning, I haven't had to clean them yet... The tag on the inside says the inner liner can be machine washed but the outer cannot. To clean the outer it says use a sponge and hang to dry. Yea the silver color probably doesn't absorb heat from the sun as much, thats why I got that color. There are mesh areas below and above the knee, and on the back of the leg from mid-thigh down...
