The shape of the tank leads to dents/rashes on the sides that stick out beyond the frame that often breach the integrity, leaking fuel. Doesn't happen much on the track because of the relatively low impact height, but on the street all sorts of more violent things happen. There are even aftermarket stick on tank sliders (delrin form fitted pucks) for the R6 that help spread the impact and provide a little scuff resistance.
Once a bike's on fire, it's toast. If it gets into to the electrical system, it's a total loss.
Unfortunately, the Kawis are going to a similar shape with their tanks in the 09+ line, too, with similar negative results.
