The bikes are supposed to put down around 190 hp and get a 10-12 hp boost as the ram air intakes gains pressure at speed (which works considering that extra hp doesn't do much till 100+ anyways on something that light). So 186 at the crank isn't far off of 190, then add the advancing power from the intake any it will get close to the 200 mark.
I'm sure the 170 hp number back in 99 was probably calculated similarly as well.
Then theres of course the crazies out there with turboes hitting 500+ hp. And to think, we all do just fine with 30 hp :-o
