Thats what I want to know. I do know that if you buy 87 octane from top tier gas companies (i.e. Chevron, Texaco, Shell) they have detergents in their fuels to help burn cleaner.

The only thing that I know that higher octane does is to prevent engine "knocking" because of its resistivity to burn.
