As long as your rearsets use the stock shift arm clamp they will be OK. you may install before or after either way in this case.

I am using the woodcraft rearsets with the stock shift lever and shift clamp.
I do not know if other rearsets come with a new shift clamp or not.

If this piece is stock on your bike, you can use the current shift style shift switches/bracket.



Otherwise, you may have to devise your own two limit switches, which is perfectly reasonable as well! It'll work on anything with an up and downshift with a bit of modifications.
