How have automatics become more efficient than manuals? Even with CVT or lockup torque converters, they still require a torque converter which adds weight and bleeds power. The only scenario I can think of where automatics will be better efficiently are on turbocharged diesel engines since automatics will shift faster than a human can. I must be behind the times
