How does that make sense?

My friend was asking me if I would upgrade to a SV650 and I told him I probably wouldn't for several reasons. The first, being that I'm still a fairly new rider and only have 7200km (4500miles) under my belt, and the second reason is because in a few months I'm going to be a father and I don't need to be spending extra money on insurance. He told me sometimes it depends on the bike, and the SV could actually be cheaper than the ninja. I didn't believe him so I'm asking you guys.

Judging by Alex's statement, I suppose the year of the bike has a big influence on the price you pay... so if I bought a 2003 SV650, hypothetically speaking, would the insurance be cheaper than a 2011 ninja 250r because its 8 years older?
