I ended up going with a mt 2011 328i xdrive. The handling is a little different from the RWD one from what I've heard, but I don't think it's enough that I'll be able to tell a difference in my every day driving.

+1 on the useless nature of the 1 series back seats. I knew there was limited space back there, but I didn't realize how much until I went and saw one in person.
