Ask the sales associate to remove the pads if possible so you can feel the "dome fit" around the top of your head. Feels like a baseball cap...
You want it snug enough to move your forehead skin but not make your head ache. then put the pads in and check that fit. Tight on the cheeks but open and close your mouth. You do not want to be biting the sides of your mouth.
Some helmets offer different sized cheek pads.
