For the warranty to be voided, the manufacturer needs to show that the unauthorized modifications were related to the failure. For example, if someone put a completely unsuitable type of oil in the bike, and the engine was shown to fail due to that oil, the warranty would be voided and the owner would have no chance of recovering those costs in court or mediation. But it's nowhere near as broad as "anything altering the performance of the engine" voids the warranty on any engine problems down the line. That's not legal. Or accurate.

I bought a new 2012 650 and when I asked the dealer about the new two brothers complete exhaust system, he said he could give me a good deal on it but that I should be aware it will void the warranty. Didn't go into it more.
