One thing I've noticed, post-shimming, is how little I have to leave the choke on during cold starts. Mind you I have never subscribed to the idea of "leave your bike running until it warms up", I've always ridden it with choke on until engine warm-up, but after shimming, I barely have the choke on for a minute or two at most, before I'm closing it. So, that could be a benefit of shimming (it was for me) and you should really get off your bum and do it!...the difference is outstanding!
