I'd definitely check with your local dealerships and see what it'd cost you OTD for a brand new 2012. I'm sure prices across the country will vary but I can pick up a 2012 SE Ninja 250 around here for $4600 OTD. I'd definitely go for that over even $4400 for a used 2012 with 40 miles or w/e. Point being, if you're bent on paying new prices, buy new.
Not sure where in Michigan you live but if you're trying to get a 'great' deal, I definitely wouldn't limit myself to just my town. Just did a quick search of 2 craigslist locations for Michigan and found quite a few decent looking bikes asking around $3400-3600.
