Don't let online advice encourage you to ride above your comfort level. Figure out your wind threshold, and when it's windier than that, take the cage. There are lots of techniques that will help you control the bike on a windy day, but until you get comfortable with wind (a little at a time) it can make you hate your motorcycle.
