Lol, it is really become a lost art, but the technology is amazing. The licensing no longer requires knowing morse code, and you can find some really cheap, old military receivers that work great. I have an ICOM IC-R71, and a handheld ICOM IC-R5. It's really a great hobby.

Now, for your veiwing pleasure...
To the tune of Ganster's Paradise.

As I tune in the valley's and I check out my gain,
this signal is booming, something I can't explain!
But that's ok to an expert like me,
cause this mod sim **** ain't nuttin' but theory,
Early in the mornin' Ima tunin' in,
and I'm checkin' RF flow with a signal gen.
so I patch a few connections here and there.
got so many harmonics that my signals square!

I make some adjustments and I look at my scope.
now the spectrum is clear, this **** is dope...fool
It's the kinda signal that ya really wanna see
FSK modulation with spectral centricity

Oh man this tunin is nice, living in a RF paradise,
Oh man this tunin is nice, living in a RF paradise,
We're spendin most of our lives, tunin in a RF paradise,
We're spendin most of our lives, tunin in a RF paradise.

I've got a situation with antenuation,
tryin to listen to a signal from across the nation.
So I gotta get this voice comin' strong,
It could be solar flares, but I might be wrong
I'm an engineer with propagation on my mind.
A TDR's in my hand, and i'm testin' lines
LPA to my left, a dipole on my right,
LNA's in my pocket, make that signal look tight.. fool
now the sun is settin, and now I'm bettin',
these temperature inversions, make that signal jettin'
It's 630 now, my transmission is flowin,
so long and far it just keeps on goin,

how come we, have no theories,
how antenna's work? It boggles me.
(Chorus)
