After trying to figure it out for many years I have come to this conclusion: people spend money on many things that are not virtual but it is pretty much similar. Consumables last for a brief period but of course it replenishes your energy. For some people, trying to 'farm' for those millions vs paying $5(or whatever the rate is) is worth it. If say, it takes 20 hours to make 20 million, but it takes them 5 minutes to make $5 that can buy the 20 million then they rather do that. This is what I have gathered from asking people I have played with as to why they spend money for something virtual. In the end, it is worth what you are willing to pay for it. If there was not a demand, then there wouldn't be sellers - basics of capitalism.
