I'd say a more accurate analogy is
the sneaker person packs a primary chute.
the boot person packs both primary and secondary chutes.
statistics may show 5000:1 of the time the sneaker guy would be ok with the primary chute.

My answer is no, the risk is too great.
i know people that had ankle injuries in the construction trades, and the quality of life afterwards was terrible.
living with a permanently injured ankle is not a risk i'm willing to take.
